Help!!!!

i received my ams intake today and i was going to install but i am getting the Ecutek tune saturday and from what i have been reading there are no or little gains doing a intake then tune.basically the intake is a waist of money if you are getting a tune.is this true?should i sell intake and go with a drop in + tune any info would be appreciated.

if you werent getting a tune i would say just do a drop in but since your about to get tunned then i would say put the intake on, you already have it anyway. and yes a intake all by itself yeilds little gains but when its combined with all the other bolt ons they all work together. just my .02

If you have the intake all ready, keep it. It just looks better.

Yep, total waste of money. Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but it's the truth. Go back to the thread about the AEM intake and read my post on page 3, that pretty much says it all.

That is not true at all. we have tuned cars here without an intake and with and even with a tune the intake makes power over just a tune. Its a more free flowing pipe and a larger MAF housing. So long as the tuner knows what he is doing you will make more power with a tune and an intake then just a tune.

Intake is still going to make power over a tune for the obvious reasons...it flows better. It won't be making as much power per say as just untuned because most of the gains from the intakes are due to leaning out the air fuel ratio but it is still making significant gains in power and those gains just compound as you turn up the boost and add more mods

Well, the stock intake isn't a restriction at these power levels, and there have been many tests showing two identical cars, one with a drop in filter and one with an intake, and they both make the same power with a reflash. The maf pipe being larger diameter is inconsequential once tuned because all that it does on an untuned car is trick the maf into telling the ecu to stay in a lower load cell and stay leaner and run more timing. Once the car is tuned properly it has little to no effect at these power levels. As far as the flow is concerned, all of the improvement in flow is because of the filter element moreso than the piping. Thus a drop in is just as effective and the stock box with a flat panel filter tends to cause less turbulence over the maf than a open element cone filter.

This tends to give more consistent maf readings and thus more consistent power delivery. No offense to AMS, they make great quality products that are dyno proven to work well. I just think that until you are making so much power that the stock box is a restriction that intakes are a waste of money and a drop in filter is a better way to go. Plus, unless you are running the cold air attachment to relocate the filter then you are pulling in hot engine bay air, and it may not show on the dyno when the hood is open and fans are blowing over it, but you'll notice it when you're driving. The stock box pulls in cool, outside air and doesn't need to run long piping to go into the fenderwell or the bumper to do so.
