Evo X problems
Evo X problems
hey everyone I need some help. my evo x is bone stock besides Rays volk ze40s and I'm having problems. it's a 14 with 4,000. in 3rd gear when starting under 4000rpms at 5000 it like pauses for a second then goes. same with 4th gear under 4000 but at around 4100 it does it. I've been testing it doing pulls like that and sometimes it didn't happen but it keeps doing it! it's making me angry. sometimes also does it at different rpms but just in 3rd and 4th. please help me guys thanks
Describe this pause. Does it jerk the car around? Do the RPMs literally hold at a number then continue? Is it the car that "pauses" and then the RPMs rev up, but the car doesn't move accordingly? I hate to even suggest this with such low miles, but... clutch? Have you been launching the car or being rough on it? I've heard of clutches going out in this low of miles but you would really have to bang on the car to do it. 3rd and 4th is where you would see clutch issues that's why I am throwing it out there.
Its in warranty so just take it in. But you may need to define "Pause" if you want more help here.

the best way that i could describe it is probably like a quick flutter on the needle. it like hesitates for a slight second then goes. This morning it also boosted from 4000 to 5000 like crazy....over boost?
and i dont think ive been beating on the car for the clutch to be messed up. i havent 2step launched it or anything. how would i know if something is wrong with the clutch if that is the case? the clutch feels fine to me though
Even when a clutch is going out, at its early stages, you can still drive hard in lower gears because there is less engine "load". The more load there is on the engine, like peak boost in gear 4 or 5 or going up a hill in 3rd in boost is where you will see clutch slippage. As it gets worse, you would eventually see it happen in lower and lower gears without any boost at all.
If it's going from 4000 to 5000 without the car moving accordingly i.e. your at 4000, it revs to 5000, then the RPMs go back down to something like 4100, then that sounds like the clutch. Stock clutch is widely accepted as pretty week on these and you really have to drive them smart to get the life out of them that you would expect out of another car. There are many threads on clutch slipping so I would look some of those up and see if they apply.
Overboosting can cause boostcut which causes a very noticeable hesitation/shock and the car jerks and the nose will dive (my personal experience with overboost) because you end up hitting fuel cut and the engine stops making power pretty much instantly then it may continue normally after fuel is restored , sometimes with a CEL.
But for all intensive purposes, your RPMs would drop not spike.
Overboosting throws a code so go to the dealer, have them check the codes and if there isn't anything start looking into clutch related issues.
I'm not an expert. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I'm just a dude on a forum and these are things that have happened to me over the last 3 years that sound like what you're going through.

I reference "slipping" as when it happens in the context you are experiencing.
Its "safe" if you're safe about it. Every time you slip that clutch under load its doing multiple things. Glazing the clutch further and producing heat.
The more it slips the worse it will get until my scenario I mentioned above happens where you won't be able to drive.
Also every time it slips you are putting an intense amount of friction on the flywheel that generates massive amounts of heat and you can create hot-spots which may hinder/keep it from getting it resurfaced.

Un-smooth power band, the car would frequently break up under full load at higher rpm's. It Frustrated me to the point I took it to the dealer to see if it was throwing any codes. After inspection there were no codes thrown and nothing wrong with the car... Their explanation was that it is the stock tune and the break up is some kind of safety crap when the car is in higher rpm's.... After my tune the car never does this anymore and power band is smooth as butter and an absolute blast to drive👍 if u discover it's not your clutch I highly recommend saying see ya later to the stock tune and getting a pro-tune!!!! Hope this helps
I've seen this a couple times on my '15 MR. Due to the rarity/inconsistency of the issue I don't want to say it's the clutch pack, but I did get some clutch slippage after a few launches during autox at Proving Grounds (you're damn right I was using the launch control).
Interested to see what comes of this.
