EVO X - Difficulty getting in to 2nd gear from 1st.
Mine is getting better. It seems to be being a little resistant now when cold, but when it warms up it seems to be getting better. I am cautiously optimistic that it may go away with time and repeated 1st to 2nd gear shifts. I have been downshifting when coming to a stop to get repeated interaction between the syncros to see if that would help. If it is a wearing in deal with the syncros, then its not important the miles driven but the number of shifts and syncro engagements that are performed.

Well, I still think that it IS a fluid issue. The reason that the problem is isolated to the first 3 gears, and not every gear as someone mentioned earlier, is because the synchros are different on these gears. Tripple cone on 1st through 3rd, double on 4th and 5th. For what it's worth, mine is still notchy sometimes even in 4th. Much less so and less often, but it still does it. The only gear that it doesn't seem to do it in is 5th. The more intricate the synchro setup on a particular gear, ie tripple on 1,2, and 3, the more finicky it will be when it comes to synchro friendly fluid. I am going to try to change to a different fluid and see if this fixes the problem. I guess that I will have to be a pioneer with ths one, as no one else seems to be willing to try this. Mitsu can't void the warranty for experimenting with this, as they CANNOT mandate what brand fluid you use as long as it's the correct weight. Hopefully I can find something that works well. Not many companies seem to offer a 75W80 fluid, which is what the X calls for. I'll let you guys know.

Sorry to bring this from teh dead, but any updates, just got my x a week ago and i have the same issue, second gear is like the tranny almost does not want me to use it. Like it stops me then lets me get into and you can hear like a nock(sort of) same for 3rd gear but is not as bad.
I got my evo x may the 29th this year. at about 1000 miles it started to feel like it was grindind going from 1st gear to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. I took the car back to the dealer. they dropped the tranny and found that the cyncros (spelling) for 2nd and 3rd were worn out. they went ahead and replaced all 5. also they said that the clotch preasure plate was also showing sings of wear. I don't drive that car hard yet so there should not be a rason why the plate is worn that bad and they replaced it also. the good thing is that they did all of this under warranty. they even gave me a lowner car. that was very surprising. they kept the car for 2 weeks waiting for parts. I finally got my car 2 days ago. what i'm trying to say is don't wait too long to take it back. mitsubishi is bad about doing warranty work
Best bet is to really break it all in and take it to the track! Well my shifting seems to be really smooth on my X until you try and muscle the shifts under pressure... for me I had a hell of a time on the 2 -> 3 shift where it would almost lock me out and I had to double clutch to get it to allow the shift. Still ran that 13.6 @ 101 so now I'm going to start fixing all the issues with power and other improved parts.
I got the underhood shifter bushings from AMS and I have a feeling much of that spongy rubber feeling will go away once I get those in. Also around turns I've noticed that a 2 - > 3 shift is really hard to pull off so the AMS motor mount is also getting installed to reduce the engine from moving around. I'm also going to look into removing the restrictor in the clutch line or maybe just get a stainless braided one. Seems that all of these tweaks really make the car easier to shift especially when you are aiming for performance.
As for the fluid when cold, perhaps we need one that flows a little easier for cold startups, not sure how BG Synchroshift II would improve things or if it is even compatible. That's really bad news that some of you guys are having 1 -> 2 shift problems so early in the game. I would say if it hasn't worked itself out by 2000 miles it really won't get any better with time.

Same here, I took my car to dealer for 2nd to 3rd gear grind and they're replacing all syncros...but i have to wait more then a month before I get my car.... all parts are on back order.
That's great, they'll replace the synchros and it'll happen all over again because they don't know what's causing the issue. My guess is that the fluid used is not synchro friendly or there is a mechanical defect in the design of the tranny, and mitsu is doing nothing about it. Mitsu corporate still just says the same bull**** about the tranny "opperating within design specifications," or whatever crap they want to claim, and nothing is being done to resolve the issue. They are doing nothing. It's been like 6 months of them "trying new fluids" to see if that's the issue, and I guess that they just don't care anymore because there have been no TSBs sent out to dealers, no nothing. I've learned how to shift around it but I shouldn't have to shift in a special way to not have the damn thing grind, and I'm getting sick of this. I love the rest of the car, except for the cheap *** interior and the awful factory ecu tune. Mitsu better fix this crap or they will never get any of my business ever again. Rant over.

When cold you could try to shift a little slower. It will go in perfect sometimes....
You could also try this....but prob should be done once a little warm. Put a little pressure on the shift knob like you were going to shift....when you press the clutch, it shift knob will now move and you can go into 2nd. works for 3rd and 4th too.
it's almost like you are trying to move the knob before pressing the clutch, but without enough pressure to actually move it. sometimes when you get it quick like that, it shifts better as well.
it's kind of the opposite of normal which is push the cluth in, then shift. this method is start to put pressure on the shift knob, then push the clutch in.
not sure if I made much sense, but let me know if you try it.

I'm just wondering, my 3rd gear syncro seems to be ****ed. I hear a lot of grinding and have been double clutching really slow to get it through. The dealership said that because I have a boost controller that it isn't covered under warranty. Do you think I'm getting jerked around? I called a different dealership and they thought that it was bull**** that I was getting that response from the other dealership. Did anyone get that response from the dealership?
