Turbo area tapping noise
thx for your thoughts hollywood. another local X owner i talk to said his makes the same noise and he believes it to be some play in the wastegate actuator. can anybody confirm this theory?
another update:
still have been hearing the tapping sound. today i removed the foil chimney and took a peak down to see if anything was missing. sure enough a bolt is missing to the heat shield that wraps around the turbo/downpipe connector area. not sure the technical term for this part. any idear where i can find the bolt size/part no.?? this is most definitely the cause of the tapping.
i attached a pic of the missing bolt.

looks like this guy already went through the same situation and finally got his fixed after 6 visits to the dealership... tappets are bent/broken:

So I was making the video of my turbo tick to put up and did a cold start vid and than warmed the car up with a brisk under 5k rpm drive for about 5 minutes. Car got up to temp and I popped the hood and took the 2nd video. Well the noise was there. A metallic noise, not the injectors but something else. Very faint, but there. I used the old screw driver stethoscope and started listening to various parts of the engine. Well great news!!! I found the source! There is a heat shield that sits on top on the manifold, almost sandwiched between the top heat shield and the engine. I put the screw driver on the center part of it and poof! no noise. Not what i was expecting as everything is tight, but that is the source. It must expand under heat just enough to vibrate in tune with the engine and contacts something else, but on a super slight scale. It is the tin plate type shield vs the alum. one. Hope this helps you!
pic is the shield that is bolted down but has resonance.

yep, that's where I initially thought mine was coming from - the exhaust manifold gasket. if i put pressure on it, the noise went away slightly. it could just be an exhaust leak in the manifold gasket that's causing it. i'm not going to lose anymore sleep over it though. thanks for your input!

Did that totally fix the issue for you? knowing that was the part?
OP did you try the same thing and come to the conclusion thats the issue?
You guys probably love your car as much as I do so I want to make sure its not serious (I even took the valve cover off to inspect).
UPDATE:
tried to hold down press up, different plces on the metal in question and it had no effect on the metallic knocking... back to square one. I have a shop install my clutch tomorrow, Ill have them listen to it and get a compression check as well... I'll let you guys know what I find out.
