thx for your thoughts hollywood. another local X owner i talk to said his makes the same noise and he believes it to be some play in the wastegate actuator. can anybody confirm this theory?

i attached a pic of the missing bolt.

That does look like a bolt is missing for holding the heat shield to the exhaust elbow. Maybe grab a mirror and check to see if it's a threaded hole?

^yes that is missing a bolt. I think it was a 10 or 12 mm if I'm not mistaken.

yeah, the bottom bolt for the foil turbo 'chimney' (heat shield) that i removed uses that bottom hole there. i have the bolt for it.

So I was making the video of my turbo tick to put up and did a cold start vid and than warmed the car up with a brisk under 5k rpm drive for about 5 minutes. Car got up to temp and I popped the hood and took the 2nd video. Well the noise was there. A metallic noise, not the injectors but something else. Very faint, but there. I used the old screw driver stethoscope and started listening to various parts of the engine. Well great news!!! I found the source! There is a heat shield that sits on top on the manifold, almost sandwiched between the top heat shield and the engine. I put the screw driver on the center part of it and poof! no noise. Not what i was expecting as everything is tight, but that is the source. It must expand under heat just enough to vibrate in tune with the engine and contacts something else, but on a super slight scale. It is the tin plate type shield vs the alum. one. Hope this helps you!

pic is the shield that is bolted down but has resonance.

yep, that's where I initially thought mine was coming from - the exhaust manifold gasket. if i put pressure on it, the noise went away slightly. it could just be an exhaust leak in the manifold gasket that's causing it. i'm not going to lose anymore sleep over it though. thanks for your input!

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but I have been looking for a few weeks on this sound, the OP hit it right on the head I have the EXACT thing. just sucks i only founf it on youtube and no answers...with that being said

Did that totally fix the issue for you? knowing that was the part?

OP did you try the same thing and come to the conclusion thats the issue?

You guys probably love your car as much as I do so I want to make sure its not serious (I even took the valve cover off to inspect).

UPDATE:

tried to hold down press up, different plces on the metal in question and it had no effect on the metallic knocking... back to square one. I have a shop install my clutch tomorrow, Ill have them listen to it and get a compression check as well... I'll let you guys know what I find out.
