Has Mitsubishi Screwed X Owners?
I have the same problem and i will definately eventually bring it up with the dealer, after i get my ******* hood release fixed. However I was wondering if all you guys who have this problem and have yet to get around to fixing it are aware that double clutching gets rid of the problem completely. It's not a fix but its a temporary bandaid especially for those who only experience this the first few minutes of driving like me.
Guys, you bought the first model of a new car - I kind of feel sorry for you but then again I don't.
So eager to get the new "X" but those who will wait a few years will get the model with all the bugs worked out. I knew I would see these threads left and right when they first put up the X forums here on EvoM. I hate being right.
I wish you the best of lucking getting your car fixed and G/L with all the trips to the Stealership.

I've noticed that shifting firmly and quickly or extremely slowly is the only way to get it to go in smoothly without crunching. It's bizarre, but anything in between i.e. normal speed seems to be just awful. I've tried shifting it immediately after pressing the clutch in vs holding in the clutch for a few seconds before shifting and it matters not. Double clutching doesn't seem to make much of a difference on mine either, as the above trick is key in any scenario to avoid the crunching.
On really hot days it doesn't seem to do it anwhere near as bad, and it's definitely worse on cold days which would point to a fluid issue. However, people who had issues with ther 8s and 9s (minor in comparison I assure you) tried bg synchroshift and it worked miracles. I've driven a X that had switched over to this same fluid and it didn't feel any different than mine. I don't know what the issue is, and although I know how to shift to avoid the crunching, I shouldn't have to use a special technique to avoid grinding.
It' shouldn't be doing this and there's no excuse for it. I mean if you think about it, I'm sure that the japanese spec Xs probably havethe same issue and those have been out since october, which means that mitsu has had almost a year to fix this crap and still nothing. Lets just say that only the US spec models have the issue (which I highly doubt is the case), that still means that mitsu has had since january to figure something out and yet we ave nothing. I love my car and I can overlook the cheap interior and bad factory tune because I didn't buy the car for the interior (although it would be nice if it were a little nicer) and I plan on getting a reflash so that's somewhat acceptable to me.
Having the damn car grind and crunch when shifted normally is not something that I am ok with, and it's disgraceful that there have been no recalls, no TSBs (other than the one telling dealers not to touch the car), no nothin. I've been patient about this because I really do love the car, but I am getting angry now. I've done my part and filed a claim with mitsu corporate, I've gone to a dealer and filed a case (even though after they drove it they said it was fine and denied that there was any issue, ****ing liars), and I've done everything that I can think of to get the ball rolling.
Mitsu is about the worst company when it comes to warranty work because they have been in financial trouble for years now and will look for any reason to not spend money if they can help it, but we have got to all do our part in voicing our dissatisfaction. Complain to dealers, flood mitsu corporate's phone lines with complaints, do whatever you have to do just do something. We all know mitsu looks at this forum in particular, and this thread is sure to catch their attention but it won't be enough. Now get out there and play your part!

Well, you probably got lucky and got one of the good trannies. Most people have issues with theirs, and some don't. Consider yourself lucky but don't think for a minute that we're all crazy just because your happens to feel ok. Trust me, if you don't feel like there's anything wrong with yours, there probably isn't. If you drove mine, you'd be shocked at what all of us other guys have been dealing with.

I don't have any problem with the stock tranny and stock clutch even at 27K miles already. it must be driver error. then again, I have been driving a manual tranny since 12 years old

Mine has gotten somewhat better now at about 700 miles. It occasionally made an audible grind going to 2nd and 3rd on upshifts early on. I have not heard a grind for about 2 weeks (about 250 miles) though it's still notchy, surprisingly more around 2nd than 3rd now. I generally try to let the car warm up for a few minutes before driving and work the gears through 2nd and third before departing (the first shifts of the day were the "notchiest" if that's a word);it seems to help. It is the roughest manual out of 3 I have owned - though I don't as much mind the feel as long as it doesn't deteriorate over time or indicate a problem that's likely to get worse. It would be interesting to know how many trannys have been replaced so far out of the few thousand EVOs sold.
I had this problem pretty bad for the first 5k miles, I am about about 5500 now and noticed a sharp decline in the notchiness, not sure what it is but it is pretty damn smooth now. The only thing I did after I diagnosed the problem was allowed the shift lever to pop over to center before engaging the next gear, and doing this for a while seemed to allow things to break in properly I guess, because now I can use and abuse it and it has no notchiness or grinding at all.
Mitsu rep
I spoke to the Mitusbishi service rep about the transmission and he basically told me that they haven't really had a big problem. So I guess this means that until they start spending money to fix/replace bombed transmissions not much will happen.
Hello and welcome to four months ago. This does not need to be a new thread with the same recycled opinions, more CT9A people coming over saying its just like their car's grind, and random bishing.
The sky is not falling. A slim few have been replaced, but many more are just fine, like mine, at 8k feel better than ever. Why? Because I have learned to adapt my shifting and deal with it.
We have a stickied thread for this which stays at the top of the drivetrain forum and has massive visibility. It continues here: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...333385&page=14
