The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
My car has about 2400 miles on it now. The shifting "issue" is pretty much gone. Shifts smoothly and quickly with no problems at all now. Previously in this thread I posted how I shifted to minimize the problem, but I no longer need that process which I posted.
One thing I want to add that I noticed. I let my Evo sit for about two weeks where I only drove it once or twice after installing a boost gauge. After the two week period and on my first drive I noticed that the notchyness was completely gone for the whole day. The day after, the notchyness came back and has been present for the past four days. I have no idea what the deal was, but I thought I'd add it. I'm at 1,600 miles now.
I get a notchy shift and some slight grind (audible) on the first shifts of the day from 1st to second and second to 3rd. Goes away after car is warm. I'm wondering myself if this is worth taking to dealer or wait a bit and see for few hundred more miles. Car has little less than 500 miles on clock and still being broken in (keeping under 5k rpm) .
From reading all this, it doesn't look like the dealer is doing anything. They are being told from corporate not to do anything. Who knows if they're working on a fix? I did talk to my service tech locally and he told me that the tranny really is fine. It's just the way it is. I really do trust this guy. He's one of the best Evo techs in the country. It might not be buttery smooth, but at least it works. I couldn't say that about my VIII tranny.
To follow up on my most from earlier ,and after reading any posts on this I could find on any forum, I decided to go out this evening and try to shift through first, second , and third with the clutch pressed before starting the car. I then started and let it idle for a few minutes and then backed out the drive way and proceeded through 1-2-3 with no or minimal notchiness or grinding(mild notchiness into 3rd and smooth into 2nd to be exact). I'm a relative ignoramus on drivetrain internals but the theory I read was that the shifts prior to starting would get fluids on the synchronizers (I have no idea of this is valid at all). I'm leery of extrapolating from a sample of 1 , but I thought it would be interesting to see if a few who have start-up only notchiness / grinding experienced the same.
Since I use this as a DD and do not launch hard I'm not excited by the prospect of replacing a clutch or transmission within the first 20K or so miles (heck, I had a late 80's Supra that didn't need a new clutch until 100K and I think the prior owner beat the snot out of it). Ideally this is some fluids issue that will get resolved by Mitsu later or even "just the way it is" with no deterioration over time.

man just step on your car my x has 4000 abused miles and no problem exept the stock clutch that i destroid it the first week i got the car no break in no nothing just abusing that puppy out of the hole and my friend has over 10,000 with no problems
my problem is when i think i have put it into gear and i go ahead it just revs the engine, and i find out its half way in.
once i was reversing out of the drive way and i start to hear click click click....at the end of the drive way i notice my reverse gear was half way out. ( i was slipping the clutch at the moment)
but i double clutch when the car is cold, helps alot for me. i get notchiness and from time to time a very minor grind( when i dont double clutch on a cold start). i started playing around 3rd gear to try to get the notchiness out and it works something. its a special technique i have to use with a tad bit of luck at the moment. but i will try again some more and update you guys.
Someone mentioned getting butter smooth gears when the car is spooling or fully boosted +1 of that!

Lately, my car has gone from normal - completely smooth shifts to notchy shifts within a few minutes regardless of wether it's warm or cold. It's just really weird. One minute it shifts great, the next shift could be notchy. Like many people have said, this leads me to beleive it's a fluid issue. I just don't want to be a guinea pig.
Well, although the new thread that I started was closed and redirected to this one, I would like to keep this topic alive in hopes of making people get more involved with voicing these concerns to their dealers and to mitsu corporate. If people don't complain then mitsu will dismiss the few that have complained and do nothing about it. It doesn't matter if we can use "specal techniques" to avoid the grinding and crunching, it shouldn't have to be that way and it's unacceptable. 6 months of waiting with no resolve from mitsu is unacceptble and they need to be reminded of that.
