The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
before all if you live in allentown PA DO NOT GO TO KELLY MITSUBISHI, SERVICE IS THE WORST. now i have had my EVO x since march of 2008 neadless to say i have put tons of miles on my car, it is upto 19k miles. las friday i noticed a bit of grind going from 2nd to 3rd gear and didn't think anything of it as i was just crusing home in 5th. after 3 stop lights it got anoying and really bad. if the car is reved over 4500 and you shift into 3rd it doesn't matter how slow or hard you shift it sound like it is going to blow up. needless to say, i took the car in yesterday and now i'm waiting for them to tell me i did something wrong or i must have been racing the car and they wont cover it.
I have 4100 miles and my tranny is just as bad as it was on day one. 50% of the time it's hard to get into 1st or reverse, and it's almost always notchy/grinding going from 1st to second and 2nd to 3rd.
Around 1,000 miles I installed a TWM short shifter, TWM shifter bushings and TWM weighted shift knob. While this greatly improved the feel of the shifting overall, it didn't help any with the grinding/notchiness/hard-to-engage issues.
Has anyone seen any improvement with under-the-hood or other bushings?

It hasn't gotten any worse at least, if it did I would raise more stink...

EDIT: you don't have to keep driving it like that to feel soft shifts, once you tone down after driving aggressively, the shifts still are soft. so basically, you just need to do it once in a trip.
I dunno if this is gonna work for you, but I have noticed that whenever I drive the car aggressively and push the rpms all the way to 6000 and above before shifting, the shifts seem to get all soft. Of-course, the engine would already have to be warm before you push it so much.

My notchy tranny is gone...
About a week ago I took my car out for two runs and ripped through the gears HARD. Before this my tranny was notchy as hell cold and warm. Now it shifts like I'm cutting through butter and it's a night and day difference.
I waited about a week to post this to see if it was some how temporary but it's not. The weather has been from about 20 to 40 so it's been cold and my shifts are smooth now. Moral of this lesson: try to rip through your gears hard a few times and see if it helps. It's almost like I had to break in the tranny and "knock the new off" 1800 miles.

My car still crunches and grinds and it also giving me probs when engaging first and reverse, i am so discouraged. I do not believe that its not hurting my car. Its been in 5 times atleast for the problem. The last time they drove a new GSR on the lot and said "the new gsr responds the same as yours" my thought is, it doesn't make it ok that they are ALL fd up
They are all notchy, but once the car is warmed up, just shift it firmly and it drops in smoothly. I promise you that your tranny is no different than mine, and I could get in your car right now and shift it smooth as butter. Look, as I've said before, slow and gentle while it's cold, quick and firm once it's warmed up. If you haven't learned this by now, then you need to learn it soon.

yesterday i got my car back from the shop, i took a couple of photos of the components that where changed, looking at the pictures does not show why the tranny starts shifting notchy aster a while but it shows what happents if you dont get the problem resolved quickly..
I just got my X a few days ago and I really don't have any idea what most of you are talking about. I would say you don't know how to shift, but it's to many people here that have the problem and at least a few of you know how to lol. The one thing I noticed about mine is that the RPM's do not seem to drop off as fast, and that seems to make the shifter not want to go into gear, so I wait just a half a second or so and when they come down a bit I can go right into whichever gear I am shifting to.
I can second that Royal Purple sucks ace. I had TWO turbo's go out with it. At first I thought it was something else, so I put in a 10AN drain line... same thing. It breaks down uber fast. This was on my last car, an 06 Civic Si.
I just picked up a new Evo last week and it has the gear notchiness. I have no problem engaging gears, but the notchiness is there. My old Civic had the same problem, notchiness into 3rd gear, 3rd gear popping out, notchiness into 2nd, and mis-shifts in 1-2 and 2-3. They eventually released a TSB, which was a kit that replaced some of the synchro's in it. When I test drove my new Evo I noticed the notchiness right away, so I test drove some different ones... every single one had the same issue. These were from different dealerships too. We need to hit up Mitsubishi to get a TSB issued, that is what the Civic community had to do. One owner even got a news story over the issue, the TSB was released shortly after that... hmmm, coincidence?
Oh, and YAY 1st POST!

Dude, read the test in the link supplied by doc. I am only trying to help you. Royal Purple uses cheap quality base stocks and additives, and shears out of grade quicker than almost any oil on the market. Just read the results of the test, they will say more than I ever could.
