The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
ive got a problem going from first to second and second to third. mostly when it is cold, but it seems to do it whenever it wants. Usually first thing in the morning i will double clutch it for those gears until it completely warms up that seems to help. But after the warm up it usually doesnt do it. Wow i thought i was the only one with this problem.
I dunno if this is gonna work for you, but I have noticed that whenever I drive the car aggressively and push the rpms all the way to 6000 and above before shifting, the shifts seem to get all soft. Of-course, the engine would already have to be warm before you push it so much.
EDIT: you don't have to keep driving it like that to feel soft shifts, once you tone down after driving aggressively, the shifts still are soft. so basically, you just need to do it once in a trip.

I've noticed as long as you press the clutch all the way in and shift the gears quickly, it will be smooth and quite 99% of the time, but from my experience with my old car a TT 08 Nismo 350Z, the gears and shifting was so much louder and not nearly as smooth as it is in the Evo.
Mine was very notchy at first but got much better with break in. It shifts awesome now. It still does it cold a little bit and if I don't have the clutch all the way to the floor, about a half an inch of travel left. That happens if I space out a bit while driving. This makes it feel notchy, but this is normal of any manual transmission car. Also you can wear the syncros out by resting your hand on the shifter while driving down the highway. Sometimes I also have to put the car in first, let out the clutch a bit, then back on the clutch to engage reverse. This also is normal operation of a manual.
Anyone notice that when you do an indirect shift from 1st to 2nd it doesn't grind? What I am saying is: You are in 1st gear then go to neutral and then put it in 2nd. Instead of going 1 and 2nd right away. Seems to not grind for me when I do this. Even when I do this real quick.
I always put it in 1st gear BEFORE going into reverse and I never have any troubles getting into reverse. The Evo X doesn't have a dedicated reverse gear. It has an idler gear on a separate shaft that engages with 1st and 3rd gears to give reverse. If shifting into 1st then reverse doesn't help with things, a trip to the dealership may be in your future.

Transmission Grind / Notchy Shifter Notice
I finally got an answer on my tranny. I brought it in today because I have been alarmed at the notchiness of the shifter and can now actually FEEL the gears grinding. It is definitely smooth and perfect when REALLY hot, but my daily commute to work is only 5 miles max, so the tranny probably never gets to operating temp. I have been having issues since around 600 miles (after recommended break-in) and my wife finally said something when I let her drive it the other day. It almost locks you out of 2nd gear if you gently shift it.
I have to REALLY help it into 2nd from first. I feel the clunk and occasionally the gear teeth hitting. I have been skipping 2nd and going to 3rd lately - but I shouldn't have to on a new car.
Attached is the response I received today (3-31-09) and you ALL 5 speed tranny equipped Evo X owners need to bring your cars TO THE DEALER for this issue. Even the owners who are in denial and think that this will eventually get better (because there is NO WAY bad syncros magically get better). I waited until the 5k mile service to do it JUST to make sure it's not a break in issue.
The Notice is: TT-147-22-002
I live in South Louisiana and I feel bad for the guys in colder regions because mine is BAD here and it's hot most of the year.
GET YOUR EVO X TO THE DEALER SO THEY WILL RECALL THIS ISSUE!

Waste a day at the dealer just so they can "document" the complaint?
No thanks. If I can remember the next time I ever bring it back for warranty work...maybe.
I live up here in Mass, and we had a very cold Winter this past season. Sure 2nd is a little notchy at 0 degrees F, but I managed OK...even with my short shifter. Even at that temperature it didn't take long for the tranny to warm up. You want to know what notchy is...try driving an 07 Subaru WRX in the Winter.
Tip: When your tranny is cold, NEVER force the shifter into gear...keep the clutch out until it goes into gear...gently.

Or 45 mins?
No thanks for the negative response.
I guess it's ok that you're satisfied that your brand new car shifts like crap - It's not supposed to.
My concern also, is that my 04 Evo 8 w/ 65k miles shifts better than this thing at 5k. If I wasn't guaranteed a perfect car for 5 years, I should have kept it. I sold it at 50k and had no issues, but this EVOX, brand new, never shifted as good as my 50k mile EVO 8.
Sounds like our first case of denial...next!

Maybe you should have got an MR instead.
It's interesting that the notice is dated April '08. So it has been out there for a year now. I would assume that if they were planning on doing something that they would have had enough feedback by now. It would be nice to get something done though.
