The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
Does anyone know if there's a TSB for the NEW shifter cables? If I go to the dealer again I'd like a TSB in hand so I can dodge some of the (potential) hassle.
Does your new X have a scratchy transmission too? I'm guessing no considering the complaints you voiced over your original X's tranny.
I'm looking for some light at the end of the tunnel here. My 1-2 shift is BAD. If I were to shift normally--without a 1-2 second pause between shifts--going from first to second gear it would grind 99 times out of a 100.
Something needs to be done, it's really taking the fun out of driving the car.

Changed the tranny fluid to AMSOIL MTG, and it definitely helped out with the notchy-ness. Tranny works pretty well once the car is warmed up. But definitely slightly notchy when cold.
Just change the fluid, It will help a lot, I had my other car which had same problem, i just changed oil and smooth everything, Remember the worse part for EVO x is Transmission!
I took my car to dealer and showed them, but they said no problem, I hate dealers, they just want to makes money that's it!
Other day i test drive STI 2008, Transmission was perfect, especially clutch. It was click click click!!!
Some one must show this threat to Mitsubishi and tell them about their F**ing poor quality

Put several hundred miles on it. The weather has been hot, so it should be shifting well, but it's not.
The cables make it feel stiffer for sure, but the damage is done to the trans. It still grinds every day and I am waiting on Mitsu corporate to call me back so I will let you guys know what their next step is. At this point, I'm going to start getting very aggressive with them.
They managed to break my plastic cover off of my AUX inputs and SUPERGLUED it back on! Yep, I have superglue fingerprints and all and they didn't tell me this until I tried to open it and it popped off. That's inexcusable! Plus the BOV piping was clamped in incorrectly. The service is getting bad, so I am going to have to step up my complaints.
Still working on this

Here's my two cents on the situation:
I just picked up my new X today. It has about 175 miles on it now, and I am noticing the notchy/grinding 2-3 shift, and occasionally 1-2. I don't think it has happened on any other shifts so far. Also, reverse is difficult to get into 3 out of 4 times I try it, but thats the least of my worries.
I noticed the small grind on the test drive car (Different than the car I ended up taking home due to me wanting black one). I thought nothing of it at first, but then after Ive been driving my new X all day the grind is starting to worry me.
Its very minor but Im just afraid that it will get worse. But, at the same time it seems many are saying that it goes away after its broken in, so Im not sure what to do.
I'm really NOT interested in having a brand new $30k car rebuilt with a new transmission or new synchros.
I do recall that my old WRX had a very similar problem shifting into 4th gear, and changing the fluid completely solved it. The stock subaru fluid was like **** water, and putting some thicker (conventional) gear oil solved the grinding/notchy problem.
Im just afraid of changing the fluid for the sake of long-term wear on the gearbox.
For the record, I am in West palm beach, Florida, and it was 82F outside when I picked the car up from the dealer.

Day 2 Of my Evo update:
Transmission still feels notchy this morning (79*F right now), but it seems to be getting better. Im trying to baby it right now to avoid grinding, but as others have said, it seems to shift smoother if you are at moderate RPM range and you do a very quick but careful shift.
Hopefully as it breaks in more it will decrease.

only does it when it's cold. I typically warm up my car so that it idles to about 900rpm and no more notchy/grindy noise.
However, it was always notchy/grindy till about 1.5k miles. Just have to run through the gears during break-in.

Letting you car idle does zero for warming up the gearbox. Only when the car actually moves will the gears turn, create friction and warm up the oil.
I have one of the earlier Evo X's, bought it in March '08. Yes, it takes a little extra care when the gearbox is cold. But, once warmed up it's fine. I don't notice anything I have not experienced in other manual cars over the years.
