The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
still have notchy feel shifting to 2nd and worst at 3rd, 5000 miles on odo. just installed an ams front engine mount and changed transmission oil. you won't believe the countless grain-sized shrapnel that came out with the transmission fluid, probably came from the grinding when shifting (normally, mind you).
with the new mount and oil, i suspect i have to break it in first, but if i push it at part throttle, my shifts are extremely smooth, almost like i have to put some force on my new front engine mount and break it in? if i drive normally (5-10psi of boost on take off to cruise), it still grinds, but noticeably less, which is a good thing. i hope the grinding will eventually fade away as i break in the oil and mount.

I contacted TRE, john confirmed that Mitsu made a hub/sleeve/syncro design change on the tranny.
I am sending my tranny to TRE soon for work..I'll let everyone know how it turns out...eta is about 30 days or so.

i wonder how much that synchro change thing affects the shifting. someone said it's because the gearbox shifts around due to the engine mounts, and when a driver shifts the shift gate moved to a different position. so you're forcing your shift through the gate.
Took my X w/ 1000 miles on it to the dealer to get checked out. They said it's normal and will get better with time...whatever.
I'll be changing my fluid shortly to see if that helps.

I called TRE and Shep yesterday and have not yet received a response from them yet. I have kept John Shepard up to date and he is VERY curious about any changes / revisions that the factory is doing to our cars. He hadn't heard about the revised cables until my car's story. He also was not aware that we are having notchy / grinding shifting at that time though.
I personally find this VERY hard to believe, since my whole ordeal got a response from Mitsu engineering in california just over a month ago. If this is a new change to the synchro's then maybe it's something they are JUST rolling out. Their response to me was that the shift cables from the 09 model WERE the repair for this problem. I specifically asked if that was the only change in the transmissions across the years and their response was that there was nothing else they could change to improve my shifting (another creative dodge of my question).
If, in fact, Mitsu changed the synchros from 08-09, then my case just got a LOT stronger! Thanks for the inspiration for another attempt for me at getting Mitsu to fix our problem (thier problem really).
Things that make you go hmmm...

Also:
Any way you slice this WE (the end users) know that there is an issue with the 5 speed tranny. The more information we post and the more people that actually complain to Mitsubishi will greatly increase our chances of this NOT being ignored. The more compaints they get, the more justified they are (financially) to fix our cars.
Again, I love my new car, but I sure hate the fact that it shifts like a dumptruck (when it decides to) for my 3-mile daily commute.
Thanks,
Patrick

Ive have read that the guys that drove the car hard/ beat on the car a bit experinced smoother shifts.... how many of you actually had this happen to you?
In theory it "could" work IE being when you build a new motor, you arent suppose to baby it but your not to suppose to beat the living hell out of it. No 1-5 wot runs, dont stay at a constant speed/rpm for over an hour. Give it quick accelerations and let off letting the motor slowing the car down (engine breaking)

I've noticed that it does get better as the fluid warms up, but my STi used to grind in 5th and good thing is that it shouldn't be doing any damage. I only have 230 on the odometer... I'll take it into mitsu tomorrow just to get it documented.
Ive been having the same issue for 18,000 miles. Not all the time though. Sometimes it gets so notchy it's hard to engage a gear. Mostly insecond and third. I think I'm going to finally file a complaint. Maybe get those synchros and possibly a cable. Put me on the list for Notchiness!!
I have about 7500 miles and have had issues since day one with cumbersome gear changes and clunkiness/grinding from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. I installed a TWM short shifter and console bushings a few thousand miles ago and that helped a bit.
Yesterday I got the fluid changed to Amsoil MTG, put in the AMS under hood bushings and AMS motor mounts (front and both sides). The slop in the shifter is pretty much gone, as well as the clunkiness/grinding. Everything is so much more direct and smooth. The tradeoff is a good amount of vibration in the cabin - the dash, the wheel, the clutch pedal - everything vibrates a good deal when idling. When the clutch engages in first gear to take off, if you do it slow and slip the clutch at all the whole dash vibrates even more. Makes the car feel (and sound) like a racecar. When accelerating, so much more engine noise is transmitted into the cabin. At highway speeds in 5th gear, if you touch the gas the car responds like it's in 3rd. Feels much more powerful.
As for now, the vibrating doesn't bother me - I actually quite like it in fact. My wife has yet to ride in the car with the changes, so she may not agree. Time will tell. And it seems like it may get quieter as the bushings break in - it was MUCH louder and vibrated MUCH more yesterday just after the install than it did this morning...
