The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
HAHAHA now this is funny.
I currently own a "Racecar" and have been racing for over 10 years. This is a ludicrous statement if i've ever heard one. Stock car with 295 HP is a RACECAR WITH RACING TRANSMISSION?? Now that's Funny, I wouldn't think you'd need a dogbox at that power level. Quit being in denial.
I drove a ZR1 the other day (on a racetrack!) and let me tell you how much better it shifts than my EVO X. 638 HP and even GM got it right. Clunking into gear can be a normal trait, but NOT when it's associated with grinding...THAT IS NOT NORMAL. Mitsu blew it on this one...and they aren't going to fix it and they are trying to give us the shaft.
My 1991 MR2 has been "raced" for years and now takes 330 hp no problem and shifts LIKE BUTTER. Been drag raced numerous times as well and is a SOLID 11 second car (and it's a road race car!). All this on a STOCK transmission with God only knows how many miles on it. You'd think that ALL car manufacturers would have the dang mechanics of desiging a transmission figured out since Toyota aparently nailed it 18 years ago, but oh no NOT mitsu...Oh and I'm a Mechanical engineer and have built ALL of my cars (ones I didn't buy off the lot of course) myself. Don't come here calling me a ***** (or anyone else for that matter) because Mitsu sold me some garbage without a waranty at a hefty price tag and I have a right to make it public knowledge.
Pictures attached since I know you guys wouldn't believe me. I passed all of the cars pictured then some of the owners came and talked to me and I got to show them what their cars could realy do.
haha my 2008 4-door family car is a RACECAR.
sorry I gotta laugh again.

you guys need to stop being giant gaping pussies
the car is a race car...
the tranny is notchy because it is made for a race car...
mine feels slightly notchy, but after getting warmed up, it reduces a little, but you know what...it doesnt bother me, because its an EVO!!
clunky doesnt mean its grinding and clunky doesnt mean its bad. Think of dogbox trannies..
The new 10 tranny is very very strong and feels clunky because of that reason. Stop being vaginas

mine is fairly notchy , approx 6500 miles.. i will mention it to dealer when i drop off car for the hood latch replacement
one question i had was regarding a noise, which may be the transmission? it is like a rotational noise, if i give it gas then let off the gas and coast its very noticeable ... its not really a bad sound i just don't think it was making this noise before..its not the tires or engine.. could it be the axle or transmission or something? it's hard to describe its just a rotational noise..

It doesn't eliminate the issue, but it does help a bit. I installed a TWM STS w/ both WORKS console and cable shifter bushings. The grinding is still noticable, but the shifting has a much more direct feel to it.

Ditto, mines only got 800 miles on it but it's been notchy/grinding into 2nd and 3rd gear since day one. Get's a little better when it warms up but not much. Only time it shifts smooth is when I rev match.
I have about 7500 miles and have had issues since day one with cumbersome gear changes and clunkiness/grinding from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. I installed a TWM short shifter and console bushings a few thousand miles ago and that helped a bit.
Yesterday I got the fluid changed to Amsoil MTG, put in the AMS under hood bushings and AMS motor mounts (front and both sides). The slop in the shifter is pretty much gone, as well as the clunkiness/grinding. Everything is so much more direct and smooth. The tradeoff is a good amount of vibration in the cabin - the dash, the wheel, the clutch pedal - everything vibrates a good deal when idling. When the clutch engages in first gear to take off, if you do it slow and slip the clutch at all the whole dash vibrates even more. Makes the car feel (and sound) like a racecar. When accelerating, so much more engine noise is transmitted into the cabin. At highway speeds in 5th gear, if you touch the gas the car responds like it's in 3rd. Feels much more powerful.
As for now, the vibrating doesn't bother me - I actually quite like it in fact. My
wife has yet to ride in the car with the changes, so she may not agree. Time will tell. And it seems like it may get quieter as the bushings break in - it was MUCH louder and vibrated MUCH more yesterday just after the install than it did this morning...

Well, much to my chagrin, my wife didn't like the extra noise and vibration (which I didn't think was that bad) and, considering that I carry my 6-month baby around in my car quite a bit she convinced me to take out the front mount and the motor side mount. Needless to say, the noise and vibration is gone, but so are the smooth shifts that I had gotten used to. Now I'm back to the general clunkiness and grinds from 1-2 and 2-3 that I've had since day 1. So for me, the amsoil shifter bushings, shifter cable bushings or short shifter all helped a bit but didn't eradicate the problem. The mounts made the car and shifter feel great but didn't please the wife.
So, the mounts with pre-pressed bushings are now for sale if anyone wants to trade a little noise/vibration for awesome shifts!

You've got PM!
My 2nd gear grinds and notch on the first 2-3 times of shifting on a cold start early morning but after 10mins on the highway it shifts like butter for the rest of the day even after 8 hours of resting on the parking lot when I get off work. It shifts like butter all day but the first 2 to 3 times of shifting to 2nd gear early morning after it been sitting in my garage for at least 12 hours it grinds. Anyone else getting this, I'm at 12k miles now. Should I change the tranny fluid, I haven't done that yet? It almost feels as when I shift from 1 to 2 that the clutch is half disengage and the gear gets caught in between the shift and grinds before slipping in, it's not like the notch feel where you just feel a thud. This things feels like it's eating 3 teeth before it slips in. I pretty much have to slam it in 2nd gear on my first 2 to 3 shifts every morning to avoid that grind and instead get a notch which I assume should be safer than letting it grind as it slips in.
