Thanks - I haven't seen too many in VT either. I'm in Monkton. Actually just missed you at SLMP - I could only do Friday/Saturday. You set a mark for me to shoot for since you were about 3 sec per lap faster. It was my first track event ever (I have a lot to learn), but it was a blast. Hopefully will see you at some of the SCCV events.
Its not that bad though, it sometimes happens when its warm, i know it doesn't make sense eh?
Anywho, i still love my car, when i go in for my oil change ill try swapping tranny oil, which would you guys recommend

i just joined the forum because i decided to pick up an x on monday, i'm usually a subie guy but really liked the x, is this soo much of a problem i should stick to a subie? just so you know i've been in debate for over a month going back and forth trying to decide which way to go, thought i had it pinned down but then i read this novel on the tranny problems.
I'm not sure it is a problem so much as an irritant? I actually am a suby guy as well owning previously a WRX and an STI. I just sold my STI a month ago and am a proud new owner of an X as of last weekend. I noticed this notchiness but it is not as bad as it sounds (I read this thread beforehand too). You can notice it sometimes but like most people said once you warmed up it's not there. You will love the X trust me, I am giddy every time I go out and get in it... but then again I've only had it for a week.
thanks for the reply jwoodzx7r, you helped put my mind at ease a lil which is what i want since deep down even after reading this i really wanna get the X! i'll keep ya'all posted should have it by the end of next week, i'll be traveling a ways to get it.
Definitely more of an irritant than any real issue and primarily when cold. I've had my X for six months now and still love driving it every day. I would recommend the AMS shifter bushings - essentially made this disappear for me.
I usually will experience notchiness from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. When I first got the Evo, I thought there was something wrong. But I got into the habit of letting the shifter decide the first few shifts from 1st to 2nd. What this means is that I won't force 2nd gear, but rather let it (the synchros perhaps?) decide when it will accept the shift.
Usually after a few shifts like this, the notchiness is gone and it shifts as smooth as butter. I don't think this is simply allowing the tranny to warm up. I noticed that when I don't do this, then the problem gets worst regardless of how warmed up the transmission is later on in the day. I've been able to pull this off in cold weather (30-40 F) in the morning on the way to work.
If anybody tries this, please realize that it will feel absolutely ridiculous waiting for 2nd gear to slide in properly, but the results are worth it if it works!

This is the same problem that was commonly found in evo viii/ix. One way to get rid of this notchiness is change the weak front motor mount to an aftermarket one.

awesome, a solution! If this works, then I would be pretty disappointed in Mitsubishi for not solving such a simple problem over three iterations of their halo product.
i just got my evo x..it does grind and slightly notchy..but i'm used to it, usually manual cars are like that...regarding to the reverse, it has always been like that to manual cars..
I just bought an 2010 evo X gsr less than a week ago in canada..
already since day one experiencing problems wit the grind and notchyness from 2nd-3rd... and reverse has never been so hard to get into in a manual... The car is such a blast to drive and right away i know its gonna be expensive to maintain... i already called my dealership and im sure they knew of this problem and wants me to come in monday and leave the car overnight to look at it.. they mention that they would just change the transmission oil or maybe just replace something, they're really straightforward on it and knew the tranny problem exists..
when i first test drove it i thought i would have to break it in a bit before it smoothens out, but its already 250 km in and it really doesnt sound healthy for the car to shift like that and hear grinding.. i know i can shift smoothly if i just let the tranny pull the clutch in on its own rather then forcing it in, but why am i buying a 40g+ car to not be able to shift instantly and smoothly... i still love this car and wouldnt want it any other way... hopefully there's a solution for everyone in the future.. i'll see what the dealership does about the problem and if they do replace the tranny oil - what brand they used.. the thing i love about this dealership is their service departments are people that mod cars too. so their evos are all modded and they're really straight forward on pricing and parts that ive noticed so far.. and warranty is covered as long as they order and install the parts and they can order anywhere it seems..

Don't get your hopes up, there is no "solution." I've had the car for a year and half and it's still there but I'm over it. If you're looking to improve shifting the first thing I'd suggest is a fluid change. Myself and many others run AMSOIL MTG, it makes a big difference after a couple minutes of driving to get it warmed up.
