The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
^ your symptoms are exactly the same as mine. I did change my tranny fluid at 1k miles with Motul, but it really didn't make any difference, I'm at just over 4k miles now.
I have my first track event this sunday and I plan on beating the **** out of my tranny, maybe this will break it in properly...or just break it.

13k miles, many rally miles and race track miles. not a dd car .
The tranny is smooth and works perfect so far . after 9k miles the clutch been replaced with the Exedy 3 pack single disc. For reliability, the clutch was just as new, but i needed more instant grip.
So far i do love the transmission , never mind the gearing
I use only OEM fluids every where.
Only the clutch master cylinder failed. Once, but we already working a solution for it. Right now it just been replaced.

HAHAHA now this is funny.
I currently own a "Racecar" and have been racing for over 10 years. This is a ludicrous statement if i've ever heard one. Stock car with 295 HP is a RACECAR WITH RACING TRANSMISSION?? Now that's Funny, I wouldn't think you'd need a dogbox at that power level. Quit being in denial.
I drove a ZR1 the other day (on a racetrack!) and let me tell you how much better it shifts than my EVO X. 638 HP and even GM got it right. Clunking into gear can be a normal trait, but NOT when it's associated with grinding...THAT IS NOT NORMAL. Mitsu blew it on this one...and they aren't going to fix it and they are trying to give us the shaft.
My 1991 MR2 has been "raced" for years and now takes 330 hp no problem and shifts LIKE BUTTER. Been drag raced numerous times as well and is a SOLID 11 second car (and it's a road race car!). All this on a STOCK transmission with God only knows how many miles on it. You'd think that ALL car manufacturers would have the dang mechanics of desiging a transmission figured out since Toyota aparently nailed it 18 years ago, but oh no NOT mitsu...Oh and I'm a Mechanical engineer and have built ALL of my cars (ones I didn't buy off the lot of course) myself. Don't come here calling me a ***** (or anyone else for that matter) because Mitsu sold me some garbage without a waranty at a hefty price tag and I have a right to make it public knowledge.
Pictures attached since I know you guys wouldn't believe me. I passed all of the cars pictured then some of the owners came and talked to me and I got to show them what their cars could realy do.
haha my 2008 4-door family car is a RACECAR.
sorry I gotta laugh again.

My 2nd gear grinds and notch on the first 2-3 times of shifting on a cold start early morning but after 10mins on the highway it shifts like butter for the rest of the day even after 8 hours of resting on the parking lot when I get off work. It shifts like butter all day but the first 2 to 3 times of shifting to 2nd gear early morning after it been sitting in my garage for at least 12 hours it grinds. Anyone else getting this, I'm at 12k miles now. Should I change the tranny fluid, I haven't done that yet? It almost feels as when I shift from 1 to 2 that the clutch is half disengage and the gear gets caught in between the shift and grinds before slipping in, it's not like the notch feel where you just feel a thud. This things feels like it's eating 3 teeth before it slips in. I pretty much have to slam it in 2nd gear on my first 2 to 3 shifts every morning to avoid that grind and instead get a notch which I assume should be safer than letting it grind as it slips in.
.
The transmission isn't the best for sure, but you definitely have to ease it into gear on your first drive of the day especially for the smaller gears. For instance, I don't force it into 2nd gear from 1st, but ease it in and give the syncros time to do most of the work. It does take an extra 2-3 seconds sometimes, but it will go into gear with considerate force. It will feel like it won't go in, but it will. After a few miles of slow shifting everything is buttery smooth from there. Is it the transmission? It probably is to some extent, but like your engine it needs time to warm up to work to its full potential. Keep in mind that this is not the only car out there with a notchy transmission problem and chances are slim that any of those manufacturers will repair or replace them just like
.

Same here. Tranny is slightly notchy when cold, but shifts like butter once it is warmed up....even when banging the gears HARD! This is also with no shifter bushings/engine mount and stock fluids. I did try the front engine mount, which made a night and day difference, but had just too much vibration for my tastes.
Thanks to the info from this thread I bought both sets of AMS shifter bushings. Just put in the under hood bushings this weekend and things are noticeably improved. Plan to put in the console shifter bushings next weekend and then try the motor mounts if needed. Car has 6K miles on it and has always been notchy 1-2 and 2-3. Much worse when it is cold, so it will be interesting to see what happens this winter.
