The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
Seems to only do a notchy grind into a gear if it was not engaged perfectly and completely (not sure how else to describe this). In other words, if it doesn't shift entirely all the way into it's position (only seems to happen to me from 2nd to 3rd gear), no matter what you try, i.e. trying to take it back out to neutral or trying to put it all the way into 3rd again, the notchy grind will not go away until you complete either (that's pulling it back out to neutral or forcing it into 3rd). It's like it has a problem with the sync and gets stuck somewhere in between. As for getting it to go into reverse, if you have a hard time going directly to it, just shifting through the other gears ending with a shift to 1st, it should go to reverse with less problems.

1st to 2nd always is a bit dicey, feels like its a 2stage clunk->clunk to get in... its a pretty slow change
3rd really CLUNK's in, I think this is more the shifter bottoming out on the edge of the casing - I want to take it off and have a look myself..

I have had the notchiness issue as well when my car is cold. I switched to MTG tranny fluid, and also got new under hood shifter and base bushings. HUGE improvement. Also, when shifting from 1st to Second, i put some force on the stick pushing it to the left as i shift down. From 2nd to 3rd, I shift with my hand palm-side up, with the shifter between my ring and middle finger. I know it sounds crazy, but it's a smooth shift every time, even on cold days. Hope this helps others.

If anybody remembers the DSM days, if you had the shifter not centered properly you would get a similar feel.
I looked, but both the shifter cables for the Evo X are NON-Adjustable....figures, until someone makes an set of adjustable cables, this theory will not be proven.
That is my experience.

ps. this has been discussed before many many times,, when the evo 8 and 9s came out there were threads alover the place here on evom about this,,, us old timers we already went through the learning curve on this topic and the lessons learned was that the evo tranny specially on a gsr these are very agressive trannys, they are made to handle power.
I think it might have something to do with the drive by wire system... it's very progressive. When I concentrate mostly on the throttle timing of my shifts to compensate for this everything is fine. Overall the tranny is much better than the one in my old rx8.
My experience is:
2nd gear grind
3rd gear grind
Cold or warm...
My friends experience (same model of the car - usdm 2008 X)
2nd grind
3rd grind
4th notchy
After replacing oil with AMS oil (car has 6k miles)
2nd grind worse
3rd grind worse
4th notchy about the same...
I'm putting ELF 75w80 in next week as a test...
