No one is whining, this is definitely an anoying issue that should have been addressed by the Mitsubishi engineers before this car went into production. My STi shifted 100 times smoother than this POS mitsu. gearbox.

The only time it shifts without grinding is when I'm hamering on it at the track.

No one is whining? theres 39 pages here with a whine on each page. There is a sweet spot to shift everything smooth.. Learn how manual transmission works, then take a physics class.

Maybe I know how to drive a manual better than you..IDK But I know that my transmission is notchy but I know when to shift in the rpm range, how much throttle to give it to make it shift smoothly.

Everyone is going to ***** and moan about anything of a car. Did you take a test drive before you bought the car? Should of felt it then. You choosed to buy it knowing the problem and if you didnt take a test drive your a idiot.

Different oils will give better results. Tire one of the two amsoil there is two that people recommend. After mine is warmed up it shifts very smooth, when cold it can be notchy. If that one dont work try the other amsoil.

I will say this..no dedicated reverse is stupid IMO

Whatever buddy, don't to tell me that I don't know how to drive standard, Okay cheif? Thats all I've driven for the past 15 years. I shouldn't have to rev match to get a smooth shift, none of my other car's have had an issue like this except for my VW Corrado which was indeed a POS.

Thanks for the advice though, tell me something I don't know.

Oh, and BTW the car I test drove didn't have this problem...go figure.

+1

I have a S14 road race car that shifts as smooth as butter.

i've also driven other DSM and subies that shift way smoother than this one.

maybe i'll try BG or Motul in a different weight MOTYLGEAR maybe.
dont know. i'll give some feed back as soon as i do it.

The comment wasn't point just as you, my bad. I didnt say anything about rev matching. Rev matching hasnt been don't in about 20 years back before syrcho's were used in manuals transmissions. Even though I do rev match while downshifting and as it should be when going from big gear change..example being 5th to 3rd. Syrchos can only do so much.

The test car thing wasnt directed to you but to the community in general. The car I test drove had the problem, I got on here and found out what problems people were having. I most less learn how to live with it. While test driving the car I found how to drive it smooth. The clutch has alot to do with it, damn that resistor..first thing I took out and the clutch is soooo much better.

All transmission has some type of notchness to them. Some are smoother than other but there is not one trans that has no notchness.

I have front motor mount and the bushing that go on the transmission shifting cabels it did improve shifting. Believe it or not a weight shift knob helps so much, this or the shifter bushing is often the first thing I do to a transmission period and replace the fluid with amsoil. I really do love that stuff. If it was a automatic I say put in some ATF about 2 quarts and then put in some John Deere hy-guard hydraulic fluid.

No worries man, I guess I took what you said the wrong way since I thought it was directed at me.

I'm still on the stock clutch, so maybe thats the root of my problem.

Don't get me wrong, I love this car to death, and yes I've learned to drive around this issue, but something about that 1st to 2nd gear shift...sometimes it just doesn't want to engage properly.

Im on stock clutch as well... there is a resistor in the slave clyinder..take it out and the clutch feels soo much better and doesnt let the clutch slip so slowly like it does stock.

changed my engine oil to MOTUL 300v 5w30 and the gear to BG syncroshift today.
still notchy. it got a little better when it warmed up but not by much.

i'm going to try and change it again tomorrow to motylgear to see if that makes any difference.

i'll try taking out the resistor/"pill" out over the weekend and see if that helps any as well.

Problem - transmission grinding during quick shifts.

Reason - a weight transfer occurs when you shift. The motor/tranny moves on its mounts while the shifter doesn't which results in a grind.

Solution - front motor mount. Problem with the motor mount is the severe vibration you get in the cabin. Do what I did and fill the motor mount with 3M Window Weld and it gives no extra vibration and all the benefits of grind-free shifting. Notchiness isn't solved but that gets better as the tranny gets worn in.

So what can it be about this issue? I brought mine 2 weeks ago, 700 plus miles on it and I still notice it, and I live in San Antonio and it does it no matter the weather is like, 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd is the only time it gets notchy. When shift at high rpms 5500-6000 it goes away but I dont like punching it like that.
