The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
I thought I would validate this information by contacting JNZtuning and have them check in the Mitsu CAPS software, for any new part numbers for the hub/sleeves. They reported that NONE of the hub/sleve part numbers changed from 08-09.
At this point I don't really knwo what to believe, would Mitsu change the hub/sleeve but use the same part numbers? I doubt it. Could TRE be mistaken?
TRE is out of office until July...I will try to validate then. If someone else would like to check with Shep, that would be appreciated.
7600 miles and i have the same problem with tranny and its not getting any better. i have an appointment with mitsu monday morning and will see what happens...he told me over the phone they have not had any problems and its the same dealer that replaced tinkerbells tranny...go figure. If nothing else, i will replace the fluid and engine mounts and had plan on doing a short shifter and bushings anyway....will see what happens, my first mitsu and looking like my last with this pos service...starting to miss my turbo'd TC...
street or race bushing?
I have about 7500 miles and have had issues since day one with cumbersome gear changes and clunkiness/grinding from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. I installed a TWM short shifter and console bushings a few thousand miles ago and that helped a bit.
Yesterday I got the fluid changed to Amsoil MTG, put in the AMS under hood bushings and AMS motor mounts (front and both sides). The slop in the shifter is pretty much gone, as well as the clunkiness/grinding. Everything is so much more direct and smooth. The tradeoff is a good amount of vibration in the cabin - the dash, the wheel, the clutch pedal - everything vibrates a good deal when idling. When the clutch engages in first gear to take off, if you do it slow and slip the clutch at all the whole dash vibrates even more. Makes the car feel (and sound) like a racecar. When accelerating, so much more engine noise is transmitted into the cabin. At highway speeds in 5th gear, if you touch the gas the car responds like it's in 3rd. Feels much more powerful.
As for now, the vibrating doesn't bother me - I actually quite like it in fact. My wife has yet to ride in the car with the changes, so she may not agree. Time will tell. And it seems like it may get quieter as the bushings break in - it was MUCH louder and vibrated MUCH more yesterday just after the install than it did this morning...

I just installed my TWM short shifter and Works console shifter bushings today. The car shifts much better, but the notchy/grinding shifts are still noticable when the fluids aren't warmed up, It's better though. I Think I'll purchase some Works shifter cable bushings next to see if that helps out even more.
My friend tommy just took his Evo X GSR into South Coast Mitsu he told me he was having problem going into the upper gears and sometime the shifter would pop out of gear. I thought it a worn out clutch , then today he called me and said it wont go into gear at all and was stuck on the side of the road. He took it into the dealer and they said they will check it out, and if it been abused then it wont be covered under warranty. From what i read on this post alot of Evo X owner seem to be having similar problems then shouldn't the dealer cover it ???
they better cover! spent 85 bucks to tow from buena park to south coast
.
if not than i guess i might as well save up for clutch/fly

I've had the "race" (90A durometer) bushing for ~6000 miles and it certainly takes
some getting used. When I picked up the bushing in Sept/Oct of last year I thought I was getting the "street" bushing until it came up in a thread which was which.
For me, the race bushing is livable and gives a nice solid shifting feel, but the extra noise and rattles aren't really worth it if it's a daily driver. I think I'll be giving the street version a try soon to see if I can still get the solid feel with less NVH.

Good luck though.
In theory it "could" work IE being when you build a new motor, you arent suppose to baby it but your not to suppose to beat the living hell out of it. No 1-5 wot runs, dont stay at a constant speed/rpm for over an hour. Give it quick accelerations and let off letting the motor slowing the car down (engine breaking)
Shifts are a lot smoother during hard/aggressive driving, but only during this kind of driving. Don't mistake this to mean that beating the **** out of the box is going to fix any of the problems you're having.
This break-in process is to properly seat the rings and doesn't carry over to transmissions.

over a spand of 12k miles it continually got worst. now its just gone and im pretty sure its not just the clutch. it made so many different clinging grinding pinging noises i basically had my own orchestra.
