The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
Well
This proves that it is a known issue...It is stupid that I have to skip gears to accelerate smoothly in a 5k mile NEW car w/ warranty.
If you guys could drive my 91 Mr2 turbo with a 150k miles on the tranny and then get in your EVO X, you would be complaining too! The Toyota shifts better than anything I have owned, and I have owned 25 sports cars. It has taken 300 whp of road racing for the past year without issue. NEVER been rebuilt.
Back on topic - If no one takes it to the dealer to document it, we don't get the insurance policy...

Well i'm going in soon for a service anyway so I'll prolly bring it with to show them. It really does make a difference if we would all go in and complain, thats how it works with my job and warranty issues at my job anyway.
Mine does the exact same thing ( 3500 miles ) it's bad from 1st - 2cd. It's on the way to the dealer for an unrelated issue but I told them about this and they are going to check it out.
Just like you noticed when it's warmer out I don't have to baby it as much into 2cd but it's still not acceptable. The one thing that does help is to run through the gears hard and it's good for a week or so for some reason. Also if you shift from 1st to neutral then 2cd it shifts OK which sucks but avoids the grind.

I finally got an answer on my tranny. I brought it in today because I have been alarmed at the notchiness of the shifter and can now actually FEEL the gears grinding. It is definitely smooth and perfect when REALLY hot, but my daily commute to work is only 5 miles max, so the tranny probably never gets to operating temp. I have been having issues since day 1 and my wife finally said something when I let her drive it the other day. It almost locks you out of 2nd gear if you gently shift it.
I have to REALLY help it into 2nd from first. If I go any faster I feel the clunk and occasionally the gear teeth hitting. I have been skipping 2nd and going to 3rd lately - but I shouldn't have to on a new car.
Attached is the response I received today (3-31-09) and you ALL Evo x owners need to bring your cars TO THE DEALER for this issue. Even the owners who are in denial and think that this will eventually get better (because there is NO WAY bad syncros magically get better). I waited until the 5k mile service to do it JUST to make sure it's not a break in issue.
The Notice is: TT-147-22-002
I live in South Louisiana and I feel bad for the guys in colder regions because mine is BAD here and it's hot most of the year.
GET YOUR EVO X TO THE DEALER SO THEY WILL RECALL THIS ISSUE!

And your 1-2 shift sounds exactly like mine. Hot or cold I'm fighting to get into second and I have over 10,000 mi on the ODO. It's ridiculous. The uber-frustrated part of me wishes the thing would just explode so I can get a new one.

P.S. Merge.
And I haven't updated the thread in a while, but here's my story: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...red-metal.html
More information
I talked to John Shepard of Sheptrans.com and he told me some interesting information as follows:
1) He doesn't get this complaint about the tranny's that he has gone through already and was not aware that there were any issues like this.
2) He informed me that the EVO X 5 speed is the best Mitsu manual trans made to date and was saying that they really did thier homework as far as strengthening and reliability.
3) He also told me that based on my past experience (I had a stage 3 shep trans in my old 1994 awd car) that if I thought something was wrong with it with this few of miles on the car to keep pursuing the dealer to get me a fix.
Just wanted to add this.

And one more
I am starting to wonder if this is an issue with only earlier cars. Or perhaps cars that sat on the lot and were test-driven more than others. I had 63 miles on mine when I bought it, and it had sat on the lot for almost a year when I did. Usually people don't take the time to warm up tranny on test-drive and it's making me wonder if the damage could have been done back then.
Frustrating for sure.
Frustrating for sure.

Update No. 1
The Tech line suggested for my dealership to change the shifter cables. They ordered them and told me to bring the car in later this week. I will take a better look at them tonight to see exactly how they operate (ie - is bracket adjustable or fixed detents?). I did have a similar issue with a 1998 GSX after clutch install and yes adjusting the bracket for the cables helped a ton. Bad news is the same girl that gave me the paper said this today, "This might not FIX the problem, but should make it less noticeable.".
Interesting - I will let you know how it pans out.
If this does somehow fix it I am going to demand a new tranny that hasn't had syncro's hurt from bad cables! (maybe that's what she meant).

Yah mine are out, took it to the dealer, he sent me right over to a upholstry shop, the shop said "Thats horrible, there's nothing to hold the material over the shoulder area". They called the dealer, dealer said yah we gotta fix that, but it's gotta go through MMA....MMA said "Don't touch the car"
God I hate MMA. All these issues and they don't give a flying ****

If you would, please p.m. a copy of your thumbnail, I've fought with my dealership over this and they tell me it's a characteristic of the vehicle!!! I too will pursue this issue, my transmission has been totally rocky since day one!
P.S. I have zero mods and they tried saying I was syncro crunching my X??? OK!
