If your car requires the "GL-3" Spec, you would have to use the MTF if the Dealer does it to meet their warranty requirements..

Hey Oil Doc,

After driving for about 1000 miles with Amsoil MTG I can confirm that it shifts buttery smooth when warmed up, but do you have a solution for the cold shift with the Amsoil MTG fluid? The only issue I have is just a harder time engaging from first to second gear when cold especially now since it's winter time while other gears feels just fine. Just as a precaution, I let the car warm up a minute or two before I begin my drives because of it to lessen the issue. When summer comes around, this won't annoy me as much I'm sure. Could I mix lets say Amsoil MTF with the MTG? If you can, would you know a recommend mix ratio?

Thanks

DO NOT mix MTF and MTG.... one is a fluid, the other a gear lube and their additive packs are NOT compatible...

The MTF is the replacement fluid for the trannies that call for the "GL-3" fluid but most EVO's are run hard enough or modified to the point where the MTF will or the Stock fluid may not hold up.

The cold shift problem from 1-2 is what the "GL-3" fluid was suppose to help... But at what expense ? A few minutes to get it warmed up is well worth the life of the transmission to me.

You are only the second person that has reported any type of problem and both are when it is cold...

There is definitely a mechanical problem with the transmissions and all we can do is hope to alleviate the problems as best as possible.. Probably after a few more miles, this will let up to...

All mechanical items, whether the engine, trans, TC or whatever are designed to run at operating temps.

Ok guys my tranny is starting to make some clunking(don't know if thats even a word, but my tranny vibrates) noise when shifting from 1st-2nd. and it feels like my syncros are going again (had all my syncros replace at 3.5k miles). I'm really trying to like this car but I feel like I got a lemon. I drive about 20% city and 80% high way, and I rarely get on it. I don't know what I'm doing wrong here. I had an evo ix(which had no problems with it at all, and I learned how to drive stick on that car) before the X so driving stick is not a problem for me.
Back to the dealer for me.

Wait until about 1500 miles and change... so if you drive like me that will be about 10 days...

Forget the OEM Stuff.... they will lay you away for about $120.00 plus labor... If you are concerned about warranty and you have no mods, AMSOIL MTF... Otherwise, I recommend AMSOIL MTG...

3 Qts of MTG is $37.90 Plus Tax... Big Difference and a Superior Fluid

I don't know what to say about my tranny. Sometimes is smooth as butter, sometimes is notchy, and can't remember last time i had a small grind. Maybe mine is half mess up.

But i still dont understand it, i can drive and be smooth for the first few times and be smooth and then be notchy. Keep on drying and it will go back and fwd

I should be at the dealer for an oil change in a month i will mentioned it see what they say, but i dont expect them to do anything about it.

Just not to pay attention too much.. Like less clutch or not throwing a "right way the stick" etc.

You are a mechanic, so you know, the mechanical parts are working or not in the tranny

i think the biggest issue with the tranny in the EVo , they are more harsh then almost any other car on the streets. Besides the OEM clutch.
I really surprised when some one comes up and say ,oh the BMW is much softer.. I'm like ... oh yeah???

The EVo's tranny was always this clicking kind . And for me the X seems the most precised.
I did not felt really any big or major differences from the VI to up to the X tranny's.
Granted the 6 speed MT felt smoother thought.

Maybe i should refrase my sig, . Im looking for one. I am(was) a F-18 mechanic.

Oh i know is working, and i had an SRT4 which had a notchy tranny too. So i am used to it, just was not really expecting it from a 35k dollar car.

But you got a hell of a deal for $35K. Brembo's Recaros, Eibach, turbo, AWD , S-AWC, Aluminum roof etc.

How about scooting the seat forward a bit more. Allowing you to press in the clutch pedal to the floor, during shifting. Im sure this will help the grinding problems
