Oh, boy. Folks, an Evo isn't a Civic. It's a high-power performance machine with a gearbox to match. As for notchiness when cold, you guys can't be serious!

Yes, Trannys feel and behave differently when cold and when hot. Remember, there is oil in the tranny. When cold, it is thick, does not splash around to lubricate everything right away. When warm, the oil becomes thinner, moves around and coats all the parts much more freely.

On my VW, I'd always dump out the stock tranny oil and replaced with synthetic RedLine MTL oil. The difference was literally night and day. No more cold morning grinds or stiff shifting. It was smooth from the start and just got even better after it got warm.

It could be the same simple solution for the EVO trannys. Is the oil in there now synthetic or organic? I know some evo 8/9's do not take well to Redline (I guess it depends on the weight people put in and other factors), but you can always drain the $20 worth of oil out and put in other stuff if it does not work. There are other brands as well that could work.

Yes, half of the forum is just kidding....

The problem I have found is that only 1 of the 2 cars had it. That (in my opinion) means that there is something wrong with the tranny on some models instead of just the tranny being like that.

I have a 350z where every gear is notchy, and it is a f.ing pain in the *** to drive.

Has anybody tried this?

My experience differs, having discussed this issue at length over the course of yeas, and having owned 2 Evos and having driven numerous models. Search the topic. Seeing how you have all of 17 posts, the topic may be better served by those with more forum know-how.

Okey-dkey. You don't drive an Evo, remember?

Errr...not really. It's a matter of appreciating a high-performance gearbox. Sheesh!

Edit: having looked at your other posts, you don't even own an Evo.The Internet is a world of wonder.

I've been running AMSOIL MTG for past 1000 miles and it's made a very noticeable difference. The 1-2, 2-3 gear shifts are a lot smoother, and shifting when the car is cold has become a little easier. Unfortunately the notchiness and occasion grinds are still there . But so far the MTG seems to be an improvement over the stock fluid. I'm waiting to see what Mitsu comes up with to solve the problem.

Yes, AMSOIL will improve the shift in most cases..

Get about 1500 miles and switch to AMSOIL MTG, 3 qts will be needed..

Get the pump.. for about $10.00, it makes installing the fluid a lot easier.

Have you driven any Evo 10s extensively?

I had an VIII, a IX, and a X. The X transmission was so bad it was undrivable without modifying your shifting style dramatically. My VIII and IX were butter in comparison.

What this forum does not need are VIII and IX guys coming over and telling us that we're imagining it.

That is one thing that contributed to me getting rid of the car; I hated those crappy second and third grinds.

my transmission is still the best i ever drove in the EVo's. I got lucky i guess. I had 5 track days already in it. Road course .Clutch is just fine like new. . Not nochy no griding etc.
Also many spirited test driving in the widing road country
Others drove my car too, the same opinion about my tranny.

Stock fluid etc.
oh i forgot 11k miles too.

my 1st to 2nd notchiness has gotten better with time but still there occasionally. I have 3200 miles on the car now...2nd to 3rd never given me any problems, neither has 3rd to 4th...

Yes. The member that I responded to doesn't own an Evo. Can you briefly explain why you didn't ask him the same question?

"Undrivable?" Funny how you drove an "undrivable" car across country and then some. I hope that your reply is a joke and not a means of furthering needless hyperbole. It's curious how you raved about driving the X until you got another car.

What this forum does not need are VIII and IX guys coming over and telling us that we're imagining it.
If an individual drove the car, he has the right to post his opinion.

Please see above.

I posted earlier that my shifting is very notchy in my car, but now that I have almost 2 thousand miles, its starting to shift really nice. Cold shifting is still a pain, but it is understood that the fluid is not up to operating temperature just yet. About 15 minutes into the drive and everything is great. Maybe once every 50 shifts, i'll feel a little notch going into second.

Try switching to a Premium Synthetic such as AMSOIL.... MTF if you are a Daily Driver and your call calls for the non-exhistent GL-3 Spec'd Fluid.. In most cases for people who are "Spirited" Divers or Track their cars, I will recommend AMSOIL MTG which Has helped many forum members both with cold shifts and notchy shifting...

I switched to the Amsoil 75w-90 MTG tranny oil for a few days now and it is harder to shift from 1st to 2nd gear when it is cold. Once the car has warmed up, I can up/down shift better. 2nd to 3rd gear is smoother than before. Not being used to this new oil led me to grind when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear once or twice when it's cold...just have to ease it into gear with a just enough force until it warms up. I had no problems with any other gear selection other than 1st to 2nd so far.

The MTG is a slighltly higher viscosity than the MTF which will cause a little slower shifting until the tranny warms up.. Remember, everything is designed to run at operating temps.

We go with the MTG to help protect your transmission from the added HP and Torque that most EVO users generate with even a few simple bolt ons.

If you are truly a Daily Driver without tracking or spirited driving, LOL... that may be about 1/10 of a percent of EVO Owners or less, use the MTF...
