The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
I'm perfectly fine with the second gear issue as long as it's not hurting anything. If it's truely just a characteristic of the car then it's cool. But if we're slowly wearing out the synchro's and possibly the gear to follow, then we're going to have problems. Someone with high mileage needs to tear down their tranny to see what the synchro's look like.
I have noticed the grinding and crunching in between gear changes. 3-4 and 4-5 seem to be fine. The problem is 1-2 and 2-3. Reverse if often difficult to engage as well. I guess I will have to bring that up when I go to the dealership today.
I have a question for you guys. I got all my syncros replaced under warranty (at 3500 miles), and the car was at the dealer for almost a month. After I got it back I took a trip to Vegas (280+ mile drive and almost run out of gas 3/4 of the way in my trip), and now there is gear grind every time I try to put the car in reverse, this happens when tranny is warmed up, and when I come to complete stop and put the car in neutral and then to reverse. When cold it does not happen as often.
The dealer told me to just put in 2nd and then reverse to avoid the problem, which I think is complete bs since I paid nearly 40k for this car. I will continue to drive it normally and not try to find ways to avoid this problem...no matter how much it grinds.
Now It feels like my 1st-2nd and 3rd-4th syncros are going again, and my car is at 5300 miles now.
Now because my car was at the dealer for a month can I do a lemon law on this car?

Most manual tranny cars I have owned will have a little bit of trouble getting into reverse from time to time and occasionally grind when doing so. As far as the forward gears are concerned, I agree that it shouldn't be the way that it is but if you learn to shift more firmly it drops in like butter so it's really nothing to worry about. A lot of the old porsches were that way too. Hell, a lot of high performance sports cars have finicky synchros so part of it just goes with the territory. I used to get a little pissy about it too, but it's just the way it is man.
Gonna bet they put the New Mits GL-3 Fluid in it which is equivalent to 5W-30 motor oil..
With the car being under warranty all I can technically suggest is AMSOIL MTF which is a replacement for that fluid..
On the other hand, I know for a fact that their are quite a few 6 Speed owners on EVOm that are using AMSOIL MTG... (Don't ask how I know)
The slightly higher viscosity will slow everything down for a smoother shift...
Try the MTF First... Tell the Dealer you'll pay the $35.00 for the fluid if they eat the labor.. If they say anything about warranty, ask them if they are familiar with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act...

Uh... Yeah... Sure....
It is just the Viscosity Index... They just use the same scale... Different additive packs...
Just like at operating temps, 75W-90 Gear Lube and 20W-50 are about the same viscosity..

GSR Tranny roughness?
Hi, I am still learning about this new X.
I have read more than a couple of times on this forums about how the GSR tranny is rough (specially when cold) and that its only good because it can take power.
I have just test driven a GSR (new) cold, just started, and the transmission felt SMOOTH as hell.
I did, also, tried another X (just because it was another color :P and I wanted to try that one in case I were to buy it) and the second gear could get stuck!!! Not really stuck, but it would not go in as easily as the other one.
I thought that I was imagining it as I own a 350Z and the gears there are a ***** to change. But since I am reading all that about the second gear, could I be right?
Could it be that not all the trannies are working properly? (with all that 5th gear noise and all).
Question.

But it only happened on the second evo I drove (red)
