The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
I asked this once before, but I'd like to get a better answer. Are the problems people having actually audible grinds when attempting to shift? Or are they assuming a slight resistance (notchyness) is a grind? I find it very hard to beleive that 90 people that voted on here all have grinding tranny's. Mine is notchy, yes, but no grind.
At first mine was just notchy- normal stiffy shifting you get in an evo - but after about 6k km - 3rd got busted to the point when shifting in and out of it would happen as if the clutch wasn't pressed - and it wasn't just the sound - you would feel the feedback vibration on the shifter.
In essence what was happening is that the syncro wouldn't lock in place and would spin along with the input shaft causing the gear to grind on the input gear.....the teeth on the input gear even got worn out a bit, hence both the gear and the syncro had to be replaced.

I just had the mitsu service manager drive my car and agreed with me that there was a problem with my 3rd gear. Since this is a new model car the whole tranny will be replace for the first 2 years if there is any problems with the transmission. He send in a request and will have my new tranny in and ready to install in 3-4 days.

Mines appears to be stiff and grind (with full dissengagement) as i go into gears 2 &3 sometimes 4 .. but sometime when i give more gas and shift at 3k - 3.5k it won't feel that way. anybody else the same? (1100 miles btw)
My Gearbox was pretty bad when new, Cold or Hot with the typical complaints of Grind from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, etc.
But, as I took time and care to run in the gearbox (it actually says to do this in the manual) it improved a lot.
My first car (a long time ago now) was a BL Mini with all round drum brakes so I got very adept at using enging braking a lot (otherwise the car would not stop!) and so I still drive like this today. What I am trying to say is I work the box a lot, especially on the downshifts, and I know a lot of people dont.
After 1400 miles the box was pretty sweet, with the only real gripes when it is cold and the occasional 2nd to 3rd grind. I then fitted a WORKS Short Throw Shifter (mainly because of the long reach out to 5th and stupidly angled shifter position (for RHD versions obviously!)).
I currently have only 1500 miles showing and the box is now SMOOTH. The short throw shifter helped with the 2nd to 3rd shift and overall tightened up and improved the shifting experience, actually making me want to work the box more!
Bottom line, I like the box and dont feel the need to go changing fluids to improve the shift action. Having said this the stock fluid dosent sound like the best so once it has been worked out I may change at the appropriate service interval to an improved fluid.
Hope someone finds this info useful.
