The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
As I mentioned a few pages back, I did the Works short shifter and bushings upgrade, and switched to the Redline cocktail. Right after, the notchiness was still there. But then a week or two later, it basically went away almost entirely. I feel a little now and again, but otherwise the shifting feels solid. Not sure how much my upgrades helped and how much was just breakin.

I have to say I have yet to change any bushings, as it is still on my to do list. I did however change to the cocktail and its made a difference, while still notchy when cold over all there is a substantial improvement. It's still **** compared to other manuals unless your beating on it but over all I would most definitely recommend the cocktail to those who want to do or are due for a trans flush

sup guys, I have a 2013 GSR and my tranny problem is 1st to 2nd (Notchy) and 2nd to 3rd, 2nd to 3rd is the worst (Grinds randomly), rest of the gears for fine, once in while she rough to get into first and reverse, I'm taking it back tuesday to the dealer gonna make them drive the car, only hit 2,000 miles on it, I thought driving the car more it go away, only seems to be getting worst.
I was wondering if changing out the Clutch master would help to the all Metal one from AMS or SSP?

I just picked up a 2013 as well and noticed a notchy 3rd gear on my first test drive. I drove the car 1300 miles back to WA and now only really notice issues going into 1st and reverse 20% of the time. I guess it's normal behavior, but I might try some of the Works/AMS products to help alleviate the issue. So far it's the only downside to the car but I can live with a notchy transmission, feels kinda like my brothers e46 m3 transmission at times.

Damn, thought when I got my X that it was just my car specifically or me being hyper sensitive about the trans. Guess not haha seems like a lot of you are having same problems.
For me it is incredibly notchy or grindy from 2 to 3 for first few dozen shifts. If I've been driving for a while about 30-45 shifts in it is as smooth as butter. Also randomly on some days reverse is absolutley horrible to engage.

hey guys jus an update ever since my last post on 11/2/12 since i bought the car, the transmission actually shift perfect now, right now i have 1400miles on the vehichle, transmission is now ok whoohoo!! i guess just a break in period
Just started experiencing reverse gear lock-in at 55k (won't come out unless forced or car is shut off) I believe I have Redline MT90 in there now..considering switching over to Amsoil like my engine oil.
I have been a firm believer that it is a break-in issue. And mine never went away completely, comes back once in a while but it's much better than how it used to be. What concerns me is there are people at 50k etc and still have major issues. Mine went at around 5k. I will change the fluids around 25k hopefully lets see what happens. Thanks for the update.
Just picked my 2010 up on Tuesday and have a slight grind going 1-2 (rarely) and 2-3 (a lot more often). Got it from a mitsu dealer so I'm not sure if they changed the fluids or not. Any advice, how hard is it to change the fluids out?
Interesting. I've always owned manual cars and my '13 X definitely is the worst feeling tranny out of the box.
1-2 is notchy, 2-3 wants to crunch a little. It gets better when warm or shifting above 3,500 rpm. My first mile or so is getting out of my neighborhood which is a good warm up run. I don't want to ride through my neighborhood at 3k+ though. This is my first car that's still not fully warmed up by the time I get to the main road.
Reverse is by far the worst of any car I've owned. Yeah sometimes a manual can be picky with reverse but this is beyond picky. Ha ha, just glad I'm not the only one. The meme thread had some hilarious reverse jokes.
I'm gonna do all the shifter bushings and either Redline or AMSOIL. I've used Redline in my other cars and it always improved things even when they were already fairly smooth. Hopefully the fluid change will help my X out.
Maybe I'll do a short shifter at the same time but sometimes a short shifter makes things worse. Figure I'll try things with the stock shifter first and see if the problems go away. I just want it to be smooth and not crunchy, that's disconcerting, ha ha.
I did get my X with 10 miles on the clock and it's only got 460 miles on it now. Hopefully more miles will help as well.

Reverse is a *****, I've mentioned it earlier in this thread but it bares repeating. Especially when dealing with cold start in cold climate reverse can be horrible to get into gear, my favorite trick anytime your able throw it into first just roll it an inch then throw it into reverse and it should slide in without issue.
I agree that as cars break in the grinding stops but it is still a very notchy beast through and through. I just hit 21k on the car and still if I'm too slow/lethargic with my shift to third it will catch and clunk, and anytime the trans is cold getting it into second under 3k rpm can be a battle as it like to sit half way into the gear and if I'm still half asleep I have released the clutch to that awesome grind and ejection of the shift to neutral
Being my 4th Manual car i figured id be ahead of the game but there is no getting around this transmission's learning curve. For the most part I have the tricks down to a science and rarely have any real issues with it (only many quirks) but after mastering this any other manual I drive is a cake walk
