The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
(Recap:Called the service center they are replacing a Front right CV boot that was torn, also having them check on the notchy/grinding from 1-2). Turns out they got the wrong CV Boot in... But the guy on the phone said the tech has been talking with the "service line" (they can call for help I'm assuming) and he could not confirm with me if the tech felt it grinding or not shifting correctly yet. lol This is in an actual Infinity/Mitsh dealer/service center. Hope all goes well, I will update.
Yea thats the same thing they are telling me, some BS about throttle cable detents and synchronizers cause the notchy feeling, but every time I try to get them to explain how its only 3rd and sometimes 2nd, its like talking to a bird who always repeats itself or sometimes just a brick wall because they know theres more to it then that BS explanation but they dont know what it is.
I recently bought a brand new 2011 GSR and having the same exact issues. I tried a couple different things and noticed the following:
• Shifting between 2000K-3000K will always get the notchy feeling from 1st-2nd-3rd
• Shifting above 3000K will only sometimes get the notchy feeling from 1st-2nd-3rd
• If I grandma shift (extremely slow) at any RPM, it has yet to grind/notch.
I know this is a little off topic, but I previously owned a MKIII Toyota Supra with an R154 transmission in it and had the same issues. After doing some research people recommended running Redline MT-90 fluid and that made all the notchiness/grinding go away.
I wonder if this is the same case for our current transmissions.... Maybe it just needs a different type of oil... Just a suggestion

So far i am hearing that this issue is not causing any long term issues with the car so i am just riding it out. ( FYI your dealer wont ex-knowledge there is an issue)
Has anyone had this issue go away automagically and reported back yet? Mine went away around 5k. I'm reporting back, and guys I grandma the car so remember that, no track days bla bla so I havent had any fluids changed except for oil. @ 19k right meow, any questions feel free to ask.

Funny as it will sound, mine seems to be a lot less notchy after a transfer case fluid change... I never thought it would change anything, but to my biggest surprise, it feels a lot better and smoother than before...
After doing a little more research, this is what I stumbled upon. I was reading the 2011 Lancer Evolution Owner's Manual and on page 3-93 under "Upshifting". According to this manual, "For the best fuel economy and performance in using your manual transaxle, upshift as listed below."
I'm gonna attempt this and report back with results.
Shift Point
Upshift Speeds
1st gear to 2nd gear
15MPH
2nd gear to 3rd gear
25MPH
3rd gear to 4th gear
40MPH
4th gear to 5th gear
45MPH
I'm gonna attempt this and report back with results.

Switched to BG Syncroshift as recommended by a former Mitsu tech @ 1k miles...slightly better, then Redline cocktail at 2k miles, no difference...now I will try Amsoil...if that doesn't work, I give up!
This whole thread makes me feel a lot better. I definitely have a notch 2nd and 3rd gear, though 2nd sometimes seems fine. I think the problem is that since the car is new, I'm still babying it a little. I haven't tried doing high RPMs shifts mostly since I'm worried I'll wreck the gears if/when they grind at that speed. But maybe I should try it.
It also seems that a very fast and positive clutch action is necessary to get any sort of smoothness. Coming from a 10-year-old Jetta, I'm really disappointed in how ****ty the X transmission is. But... I love the rest of the car, so I'll take it as is.
Switching to the cocktail soon, along with the full Works short-shifter and bushings combo. Also throwing in the AMS gate selector bushing. I'm hoping that improves things a little.

I'd vote, but...
None of the options apply to me. I have a new X with about 3K miles. It shifts great when I shift at higher RPMs. When I just take it easy, I have to shift more slowly, which is notchy.
I believe this is related to the design of the car. I just don't think the designers meant for us to shift below 4000 RPM!
