My transmission isn't just "notchy". It grinds from 2-3. Always has.

Alright, just wanted everyone to know that I also had a major issue with the notchy feel when shifting gears (usually 2-3 gear). Coming from a 08' s2K CR, there was no comparison when it comes to which car had the better drivetrain. After doing the driver mod for a couple of months, I was fed up with the crappy feeling when shifting gears and thought that it was time to upgrade. I first bought the Works short shifter with all the base shifter bushing and cable bushing. I haven't got the chance to install the cable bushing yet but from an initial drive after the install, I instantly noticed a slight shorter throw and an overall better quality when shifting where there was less notchy feel. After driving like this for awhile, it still wasn't good enough for me. After reading numerous reviews on the AMS delrin shift knob, I gave it a shot and pulled the trigger. My first reaction to seeing the shift knob was, "Damn!" this shift knob is big (that's what she said)! I quickly swapped it out with my stock knob and went for a quick drive. Wow, what a difference. It was totally night and day difference and I am in love with my car all over again. Notchy shifting, gone. Periodic grinding, gone. Shifting was smooth, quick and precise. I cannot believe how big of a difference a shift knob and short shifter (with bushings) can make. I am still waiting for the weather to get better before installing the cable bushing. Hopefully it will add even better drivability. All in all, I totally recommend these two mods if you're looking to fix the quality of the shifter feel.

after having 2 WRX, one from 2010 and 2011 no problems at all, i decided i wanted an evo since all my friends have STI, i bought a 2011 evo gsr with 5700 miles on it, after having it im seeing a lot of problems with this car, rough idle, grinding notchy gears , problems to engage 1 then grinding form 1 to 2, and from 2 to 3, this is by far the worst car ive had and not to mention reverse lol

Guys....so let me share my info on this. I ran the OEM tranny fluid for 20k miles, through cold and hot weather. I ran the redline cocktail for another 18k miles, through more cold and hot weather. Now I run Neo (courtesy of KoolDino). Let me tell you, it's the best one I've had so far. Shifts are like butta. My shifter/tranny mods are:

Works short shifter
1 AMS under-the-hood bushing (put the other one back to stock)
Flossy shift knob
ACT HDSS clutch
ACT streetlite flywheel
Magnus CMC

Those last three probably don't matter but I listed them just in case anyone is wondering.

Rattled like a pig at a very specific rpm (that was encountered frequently at cruise). Honestly, I haven't noticed a huge difference with those under-the-hood bushings and I've been driving this car for two years.

i too had a k series car.. actually still do. but my K series trans shifts like butter.. but reverse thats another story.. i usually go from 1st to R and it doesn't grind.

but my evo x is notchy from 1-2 and 2-3 and 3-4 OEM fluid.. 22k here

When I changed all the underhood bushing to twm and also the twm full replacement, the shifting was noticeably better I only grinded twice from having it there for the past 6 months. But I'm almost 11k miles on stock tranny fluid. I have an appointment with RRE to change all fluids on Tuesday so we'll see the improvements.

So I've read through a lot of this thread. The GSR that I test drove and the GSR that I ended up buying both "grind" going from gear 2-3. I noticed it immediately on my first test drive. So obviously a lot of people have this issue but are there actually any side effects from this, or is this just normal for these cars? I don't have any problem living with it or attempting to mend it with some simple shifter mods, as long as I know this isn't damaging the car. Is what I'm hearing actually "grinding" or is it just the clunkiness of the factory transmission?

I have an issue shifting from 1st to 2nd as well. no other gears though (unless its cold and early and I'm hardly awake). occasionally I can get it to shift into 2nd well but I have to let out of the clutch rediculously slow

I have it also, since day 1. 2013 X GSR. 1-2 a little, 2-3 crunching noise a bit more often.
