will the 370z out-perform the Evo X?
The OP was originally asking what should he buy, the 370Z or the EVO X. The responses attempted to address which will outperform the other in OEM trim. And then the issue of aftermarket additions relative to each were raised as another factor determining better performance. In an attempt to end this thread let me bring this to your attention:
According to Edmunds.com-
350Z Enthusiast (no price for 370Z but will be higher than 350Z)=$37.9K
EVO X GSR = $32.9K
or >$5K more for 370Z than X. Now if one purchased and installed a simple aftermarket intake and exhaust bolt ons for ~$1K on the X . Then have a ECUTek tune for $700, you will achieve 322 whp (~380 crank hp) and 322wtq. In short, for <$2K you can have an X that will easily outperform a stock OEM 370Z and have >$3K left over to host a hell of a party! IMHO discussion over.
Finally, the new TL was raised as possibility here as well. I do not have the cost of this 305 crank hp car but please note this porker weighs >3900lbs!! You want a very smooth ride that handles the bumps really well, then the TL is for you but that car that just went by in a blur, that's the X!

Another BIAS post. Comparing the Base evo X with one of the highest models of 350Z. I cant believe you just quoted a 350Z enthusiast with Nav as your comparison price. Thats also with bigger wheels, hid's, leather seats, etc...
The base model 350Z in 2008 was in the 20's and the Base 370Z will be 29,995$ Then there would be 1 more model, Touring and it will probably be around 34,500-36k. Navi will prob be standard or an additional option in that package and it will also be available with forged wheels, 275's in the rear, etc...
The 370Z looks GREAT and I'm sure will beat a STOCK evoX in the 1/4 as long as the person doesnt just spin. Yea it can be modded, but going down that road is silly. I can get a brand new STi right now for 29,995$ and put 1000$ into it and it will beat an evo X all day. Some cars take better to mods, Turbo cars usually the latter. I'm sure the 370Z will take very well to NA mods and I believe we'll see high 12 sec 370's with basic bolt ons. And if you look in the evo X drag racing section, looks like thats where most of the X's with bolt ons are at too.
Based on what information is available, I'd say the 370Z will own the X.
Why you ask.. simple Math is the answer.
As mentioned before, when it comes to power to weight ratio, the 370Z has the evo... in simple words the evo is heavier and has less power. So in essence it would be slower.
Next comes the very factor that makes an evo an evo... the AWD. Granted the system will get you a good launch, provided you can drive, but after that all it does it eat power. To put this in perspective lets consider both cars at 60mph and in the optimum gear for acceleration.
370Z-
Firstly its lighter, secondly its got more power, thirdly its RWD. So @ 60mph, the 330 or so HP from the engine is powering only the rear wheels. For the sake of simplicity lets say each of the rear wheels is getting about 175 hp pushing it to accelerate.
Now take our beloved evo X, which is heavier, less powerful and has an awd system. So as our example above, @ 60mph, the Evo will have ~300hp going to 4 wheels. Simplicities sake, 300hp/4 wheels ~ 75hp pushing the evo to accelerate.
So the question becomes - which car would be seen pulling from the other-
lighter car putting 175hp per wheel or heavier car putting 75 hp per wheel.
Even if the evo got the launch correct, the 370Z would definitely catch up in a hurry.
Track performance cannot be debated at this point as the performance specs of the 370Z are not out yet.

Yes, you are correct if one is interested in appearances, I agree a coupe is better line than a roller skate on steroids. However, the discussion was always focused on performance and what is the best bang for the buck.

Coming from the G37 I can say that the car pulls like a bat out of hell in the top end. It's just a matter of getting the rpm's up and keeping them ther. Guys on the myg37 are pulling 13.5 stock in the 1/4 mile. So I could imagine high twelves when the Z comes out considering it isn't a fat *** like the G. Throw some twisties in there and things could rapidly change where the Evo would pull away.
Racing in a straight line for less than 15 seconds is BORING (and you will lose). Got to an autocross for a day or a road course for a weekend (much better than autocross), and your X will demolish the poor, overweight 370
I just saw the Z @ elk grove nissan ... they had 3 GTR's (2? from z car)... and a bunch of Zs and Gs... They also had the 370z... took some pics on a crappy camera... but ill post em later... So the things this Z has over the current:
Better styling IMO (you REALLLY need to see it in person... that ****er is WIDE)...
Much nicer interior
Solenoid controlled rev matching (no more heel toeing
)
IT IS REALLY WIDE (comes stock: 275 35 19 R and 245 35 19 F) with the fenders pre rolled lol
Supposed to be a little longer in the front / nose area
Much shorter in the rear
About 300lbs lighter (base to base)
Relocated stabilty bar (closer to the seats so now you really have a trunk)...
I would say... stock for stock... it would be a drivers game... if you spend anything under 5K on each car... the EVO will walk over the Z... however, once you get into the 15K territory... both cars become pretty even platforms imo...
Ill try n post them pics later tonight... got kind of a busy day....

lets say its 300 lbs lighter than the g37... thats only about a .2 - .3 in the qtr mile all things else being perfect...
I would say on a VERY good day it would run a 13.1 - 13.2. I think a lot of people underestimate how much time .2 seconds is when your race lasts a 1/4 mile lol...
But w/ a perfect driver... I would say the Z (370) should hang pretty well in the twisties... but obviously... an evo w/ a monkey will beat a noob driving a 370z lol...
LOL... im actually strongly considering trading in my G and spending like 4-5K on top to get the 370... I really like... and when you see how aggressive she is in person... you will like it too... do not be fooled by the pics lol
The z is expected to be around 3200 which I thought was a good 300+ lbs less then the evo. I agree that the track is going to shine for the evo, but the strip is probably going to the z if you are comparing stock for stock.
The 370z looks like ***. Nissan took Mitsu's cue in ruining the look of a perfectly good car.
The 2008 acura TL looks like ***. Honda like Nissan followed Mitsu and ruined the look of a beautiful machine.
I love my TL. Its to bad that they couldnt just give it awd and beef up the horse power a little bit.
I think a regular 350z ia sexier than all 3 cars. Oh and I dont see any 350z's runing 13.1 with bolt ons. Hell the turbo ones that run 6psi barely run that.
My opinion of course.

yea... exactly my point.... well @least in the speed / times department... however... unless you have personally seen one in the flesh... dont judge its looks... you really dont know how much shorter and wider it is.. if you park a regular 350 near it... you will notice that the new Z is like a foot shorter and a foot wider... the lines in the car try to hide its wideness... look at it in person... and i swear it will grow on you... i used to hate the look from the pics as well... and i have to disagree w/ you on the evo gens... the X is simply the best looking... silly bumper or not... but opinions will be opinions
