How to go from 23mpg Highway to 29mpg
Since this thread has caught my eye when it was posted, I have watch my fuel gauge closely. I recently got the car pro tuned at COBB in here Plano TX. Which from what I can tell, I'm getting better gas mileage. I drive 87 miles round trip to work everyday. I filled up my MR with 93 Chevron gas Monday morning. When I got to work this morning, my gas gauge was at 3/4s of a tank left. But each drop in the gauge probably means 2 or so gallons of gas so in reality, it might be less than 3/4 of a tank. I should not have to fill up until Thursday morning. So 3 days of 87 miles equals roughly 261 miles. Then add the remaining 1/4 tank of gas to that, I could easily drive over 300 miles a tank. But now with my COBB tune, I might get 350 out of a tank. I set the cruise at 68 mph, that seems to be the sweet spot. 99.9% all highway miles, with maybe a 5 minute stop and go senerio during the commute in the mornings. Afternoons there is no traffic.
We should rename this thread. You're full of crap if you claim to get 29mpg.
20-21mpg city driving like a granny to work or 17-18 for spirited commutes.
21 - 23 average highway (70 - 80 mph cruising). 25.# most ever driving at 60 mph pure highway miles.
I think that puts me about the same as most others on this board.
Do you think a taller tire like 255/40/18 could help on the highway miles?

Pure highway (as in, reset the avg while moving with the cruise control set), traveling on a flat road, or downhill, you could easily hit 30mpg, lol. If I were to reset my avg before coming down from the mountains, I could see really high numbers too.
I'm curious what your MPG screen reads after you reset it on flat ground with the cruise control set for 70 mph. If it reads high 20's and you average low 20's... the problem is between the steering wheel and the seat.

If I drove all the time like a hypermiler in the best conditions to reach the upper 20's MPG then I may as well trade in my evo. For long trips it's perfectly reasonable to reach these numbers but for day to day driving it's to be expected to at most get low 20's with mixxed city/highway driving and occasional on ramp acceleration thrown in. Not sure what the big debate is all about honestly.
Or we could also rename it "if noobs that only got 20 mpg would actually read what it takes to reach higher MPG they wouldn't be such **** talkers".

I was simply complaining about people using the built in mileage functions with the potential error in them. They are a good indication, but if you have different fuel, different injectors, rough terrain, etc. They are unreliable at best.
I just wish the data in this thread used this:
I drove this many miles since my last fill up/how many gallons it took to fill my car up.
Regardless this thread is meaningless, the Evo is a performance car...it is supposed to have ****ty gas mileage.
I don't think this is what most people were saying, at least I wasn't. I agree, the driver will make or break the mileage.

If you want gas mileage you bought the wrong car.

I like hypermiling to see what the best case scenario can be and also going WOT at the track for horrendous MPG and everything else in between. I'm glad that my smokescreen out the back tailpipes is somewhat minimal now too after carefull tuning. :P

One way trip home from work is about 12 miles with about 80% of it being freeway. 70mph on freeway. At the time I reach the destination the avg mpg on screen is 23 with cobb stage 1.
Jesus... There's actually people who did 300 miles on a tank... I consider myself saving gas when I get over 210 but usually around 180 per tank... I don't baby the car, I drive it whatever I feel like, one day it's going 65 from work to home, another it's going 135 all the way from work to home (no you don't get arrested for that here). Twisties uphill are a whole different chapter where the mileage REALLY begins to suck.
That being said, I'll see how much my mileage changes when I get it tuned.
Cheers
