Rules to know/live/go by if you're buying an Evo:

1. No matter the year of the Evo, never buy it used, unless you're planning on rebuilding the whole engine from top to bottom(in some cases buying a whole new create engine might be your best bet). Dealers will lie even on there own souls just to get that commission, and will tell you that the car is fine, and has never been mistreated.

2. If you mod it, know that realiability goes out the window of the last floor of the sky skrapper. Some to possibly many moded Evo's last very long, but don't get the doodoo face going if something goes wrong.

3. Never, never, I mean NEVER forget to maintain your Evo. Inspect everything inside and outside of your Evo or any vehicle you own. Stay up on your maintenance, and you should pretty much have an overall of a great experience.

OP, sucks that you had to go through such, and it sucks. I had a similar ordeal, except that mine was with a used Evo ix SE. Smh... Even my pops warned me about buying used. I should've listen...

I don't know all the details but as I recall...

The car was sold as new to him, weird deal I know. Basically the car had 5k miles and he traded in a GTS, for a new evo.

Here is the thread he created for reference:
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...1235-code.html

I hope a lot of you are reading these posts by users about buying used performance cars. If you do, you need to have the car looked over by a pro from top to bottom. Not by a "mechanic" but someone that knows these cars inside and out. It's very easy to get burned.

Unless you plan on a full rebuild, don't be surprised when something breaks.

My 2008 MR has been very reliable so far with zero issues to date outside of the recalls for the hood and airbag sensors. I'm actually surprised considering the car was a 100% new model with a new transmission like the TC-SST. I can say though that buying these cars used are definately risky propositions. Any time I take in my car for service there is always a young guy in there explaining problems with his EVO after installing aftermarket parts (Canadian dealers are much better than US ones apparently as service up here is as good or better than other brands and much, much better than Subaru) so I can see why dealers get frustrated.

It sucks when you get a lemon though so I hope you have better luck with your Nissan even though there's a chance you may not as Nissans have lots of problems.

I bought a used 08 GSR with 12,872mi and the clutch went 100miles down the road, but other than that, its been smooth sailing. Yes buying a performance car used is a gamble, and if your not willing to take that gamble then just buy new. My GSR was $40,077.00+ tax and doc fees New(fully loaded), and i purchased it for 25k in April of 2010. I saved 20k on this car and after the 2k i spent 100miles down the road, i still feel great about this purchase(and it coming with a TP, DP, Greddy SE exhaust, eibach springs, and Mag Blue TE-37's doesnt hurt)

The Japanese usually get the cars a whole model year before we do, so they get to be the beta testers, but I honestly believe the car is a solid design that among all the SSTs on the market, have had very few complaints. Nissan, VW I'm looking at you.

I always wonder what the point of these threads are. One crappy experience doesn't warrant a big outpouring of emotion. If it had been me and I'd would have leevraged a great deal on trading for a new one - but then I wouldn't have bought a used modded Evo. In the end you are just trolling. I'm sure if you ever have problems with your G you'll come here to let us in on it.

That was a deal in which no one could've refuse though...! I mean like c'mon... You took that gamble and it payed off big time, but not every used car will turn out to be a great deal/ car like yours(TEs, Navi, SSS, Aero Package, ect...) I wouldn't even had cared if the engine went If I had a deal like yours. Not that I know of due to not being related to ms. cleo, but maybe dude that sold you the car needed $$$$ immediately. As long as it worked right for you though, I'm all for Xs in the family.

Sounds like he won't be happy with anything he drivers.

And to the sheep remark, we all have different expierences with our cars. By posting on sites like this we can all learn from each other and help each other out.

i'll put it this way back then in 03 -04 which one was a cooler car and nicer ? the G35 or the Evo.
It is definitely the G35 in most people mind, right? How about today which one would you drive or the coolest between those two, the g35 or the EVo?
In the close future the G37 will be just as obsolete as the previous one's, but the EVo will stay as an EVo for loooong time. Even the EVo 3 is cool if you see one on the streets, who remembers for the 10+ year old infinty?

LOL

Hopefully they fixed the electrical problems in the G37, because I know the G35 was a nightmare! Good luck man!

I looked at picking up a G35 for a daily before the 335i, definitely a nice car with the sports package.

I'm a Mitsubishi guy though, I don't think I will ever have a day in my life when I don't own some kind of Mitsubishi.... from a 1G to Evo. They are truly one of the best bang for your buck cars.

Good Luck!

Michael

I'd get a 5.0L Mustang GT before I spend money on a G37. Better car and more bang for the buck.
