Front plate ruins the look of the front of the X. Side mounted plates looks the worse IMO. I would never do it.

When i had my 06 STi i got pulled over 6 different times for not having a front license plate... living in a small town, finally one of the cops knew me by name and wrote me a ticket for it. I asked him "So why do vettes, bmws, mercedes not get pulled over ever for not having front license plates?" He responded with "Well we think that a small fix-it ticket isn't going to make them change it because they have so much money." At that point i wanted to slap the man and he explained why front plates are 'important' by telling me, "Really it's protecting you. If someone steals your car and we can't see plates on a vehicle to run them, we might never be able to get you your car back." probably the most stupid thing i've ever heard. Really are you going to be driving on the opposite side of the road and catch random cars front plates and run them? mmm no. Just another one of those laws to be able to pull people over to check for alcohol, insurance, drugs, DUI,...etc.

Not having a front plate is only a small percentage of why cops pull any car over. Factor in all the "attention-getters" like wings, color, shiny wheels, loud exhaust, loud music, tint, thug/ricer looking character behind the wheel, bling, etc, etc. and you can end up with a suspicious vehicle/driver that may need to be investigated. It's all perception...and a bit of profiling. If you like to drive fast, eliminate all the attention-getters and make sure you are clean, respectful and most-of-all, wise to your surroundings and roads. If you like all the attention-getters, don't drive fast and be prepared for fix-it tickets.

But still be respectful to cops, even if they don't deserve it and good things may come of it. Example: I was pulled over in PA for excessive speeding (should have been locked-up). Saw him in the median too late, began to pull over even before he left his spot...basically saw his right hand go up to put the ole' Crown Vic into drive. Then turned off the car, keys on dash, flashers on, rolled down the window, hands on steering wheel, foot off brake and waited patiently. He walked up to the car laughing, took my lic/reg/ins, thanked me for not having him chase me down. He said he had to write me for something...traffic ticket for "disobeying a traffic device." Then he backed back into his original spot because I pulled over so quick. It was $100 ticket, but I could have been locked up and lic suspended.

Not all cops are the same, but reduce the amount of reasons why they need to "f" with you and you should see them less. BTW - haven't had a front plate for 10+ years in NY tri-state area...not one fix-it.
