What's the best MPG you've gotten in your X?
Is it possible that engine break in could be party to blame for the MPG estimates varying? I.E. 1 person bought new off lot and broke the motor in properly (high mpg) vs. another person who bought used after the original owner did not properly break it in (low mpg)?
I think it's crazy (awesome) that some of y'all have been able to break 30 MPG! I'm not a speed demon by any means so I don't think it's my driving (to my knowledge) that's causing such low returns--usually around 18-19 highway. The best MPG I've managed to get was a high of 24.7 and that was cruising at 65 steady for about 30-45 minutes.
I highly highly doubt anyone has actually gotten 30mpg in the X.
I believe fully that their center dash told them they were averaging that, but I doubt it was true.
Let's see some people who have documented odometer readings and gas required to refill the tank and calculated the good old fashioned way what their MPGs were. That center console can be thrown off by many factors, especially once modded and tuned.
Best I've gotten was 25.1 and that was doing ~60mph almost the entire tank. Actual mpg for the past couple years:

best yet 33.4 mpg for me. doing it the old fashion way and with a gas tracking app. console read 36mpg. bout 25 mile drive to work, rural to city but I do drop about 1100 feet in elevation over the 25 miles to work so that's
definitely a factor.

There is more to mpg than just going straight and steady on the highway too...... City is where you stand to gain the most with better technique. If you have a chance to go the same route without stopping on a 45mph vs 60mph+ road, take the 45mph road and try not to stop. 30mpg+ is cake in 5th gear going a steady 40-45mph.
The second you see a light going stale lift the throttle but not all the way. Lift until the meter shows ~45mpg and hold it there without completely letting go of the pedal. You can coast like that *far* longer than when you just let off the gas completely and it's better on mileage than pushing in the clutch. Lift when you get closer.
You don't have a battery like a hybrid but you can essentially use any time you see a slowdown to "bleed" back some mileage instead of just hitting the brakes. Think of any accumulated speed as built energy that is recaptured in various ways. Brake pedal being *dead last*.
If you see a stop (for instance heavy traffic) 2 miles up the road, gently lift the throttle just a hair and ride down the speed until you are within about .75miles of the stop. Clutch in and coast. Then let go of the throttle completely to fully trigger fuel-shutoff at .5miles and don't touch the brake pedal or clutch-IN until you're going less than 1500rpm and 15mph.
You should never be braking hard when driving efficiently. Always be going slower than 20mph minimally before touching brakes. 15 even better. Timing is key. Here are some of my hypermile tricks specific to the Evo. Eventually this becomes just how you drive without trying so hard after practice. Of course I still drive the Evo hard when the time is right. Traffic sometimes gets me into MPG mode
.
Car in front of you is turning: bleed speed in gear clutch out. Light throttle back up to speed. Lift when at speed to unload, then reapply pedal gently until speed is kept.
Car in front of you is stopping: total throttle lift, fuel-cut coast clutch out. Try to time it to not brake before 15mph.
A stop coming in 2 miles: bleed speed in gear clutch out, at .75 miles lift throttle,clutch-IN. Then out again at .5 miles.
A stop coming in .5 miles: throttle fully cut, clutch out.
Anytime maintaining speed, add 5mph in 5th over .5 miles, then lift the throttle ever so slightly and "bleed" that 5mph off over 1 mile. Rinse wash repeat. 30mpg easily, and I can prove it with odometer math not just the mpg-meter.
I've actually thought about making a youtube video of how to hypermile the Evo. It's such a unique vehicle with a steep as hell 4.69:1 final drive. Best mpg is almost exactly at 40 miles per hour in 5th while ever so slightly coasting to "unload" the motor.

I am sure it was a fluke but I saw it hit 28MPG on my trip back from Olympic National Park a few months back. Normally, if I drive like a nancy, it will get up to about 24 MPG.

I get would love to see 17-19 city but I get like 11 city and 20 hwy but then again if I was worried about gas mileage I wouldn't of bought an evo I buy cars that I like not cars that save me money on gas look at it this way you have to buy gas no madder what so get something you'll enjoy driving not something that you hate cause it gets good gas mileage just my too sense
Best ever was on a recent road trip between two gas stations without stopping. 100% highway using cruise control most of the way: 23 MPG. Stock tune, boltons... pretty much pouring gas out the back. Waiting to get tuned soon.
