Ringland/Piston Failure?
Ringland/Piston Failure?
Hey guys, just registered with the Evo community, so my apologies if im asking any questions thats have been answered already.
Im going through a transition from my GTI into A new....
I love both the STI and EVO but, im getting a lot of negative feedback on the wrx/sti when it comes to ringland/Piston failure. New or used, tuned or not, it all seems to be the same. I guess its in the design. So my question is, if I were to look into the Evo X ..... is there anything I should be worried about??
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, STi's do have a known issue with that. EVO's haven't, or at least not to the extend the STi's have (as far as the rate of failures). But search around, EVO's have their own little issues. If you buy used, depending on the year, things to look for are:
-timing chain
-axle seals (I think that is the name)
-tranny/transfer case (if used and if the last owner beat it to hell)
-RATTLES (but most of us don't care about this one... you'll learn to live with them and you'll become a pro at fixing them and STi's have the same issue)
-paint (STi's have the same issue)
Again nothing WOW or major (although you can find threads here that make it seem like every car has some issues) but just things to look out for. Tuned (something not pushing the limits of the engine) or stock, if you take care of your car, you should have any major problems with it. I got mine X back in '10 with 67 miles and although I cuss at it every now and then, I LOVE MY CAR, couldn't be happier with it. Just know what you are buying (research research research!) and know what it takes to maintain it in terms of cash (i.e. Tires aren't cheap!).

I had been a self proclaimed Mitsu fanboi since the 90's. I had bought 3 new Mitsu vehicles already when I was deciding between a Evo or sti. I was leaning to the Evo but was pretty put off from Mitsu by the way they handled warranty on one of my other Mitsu vehicles so I began leaning towards the sti as I really didnt want to give Mitsu any more of my money. That and because the local Mitsu dealerships in my area are horrible. But that ringland issue really detoured me away from them.
Isnt Subaru redesigning the wrx/sti for 2013? Engine redesign as well? If so maybe wait for those to come out.

Thanks guys, sounds good so far. I wouldn't want to have to cough up 35k and worry about a common issue that would cause a setback. Thanks for the welcome to the community by replying to my thread!
