Vibration on highway

Hi,

Just picked up a new X GSR that had 4 miles and test drove it. And all seemed well. On the way home after buying it, on the highway as the speed increases there was a vibration in the steering wheel, to the point it can numb my hand.

So, is this normal?

no.

Take it back to the dealer and have them align it and check the tires for balance.

how long did you drive it on the highway? if it's been sitting for days in this cold weather you may just have to get some heat into the tires. it usually takes me about 7-10 miles for it to smooth out. if that doesn't do anything then you probably need the wheels balanced.

I believe the car was delivered Jan 29 to the dealer, I picked it up yesterday, 2/2, and put about 16 miles on the highway.

The dealer said check the tire pressures...which I was going to do, but it started to snow, and I hoped that the dealer itself would have given me the car with the correct pressures, but I guess that would be asking too much from a stealership.

My tires (Ventus V12) have been flat spotting more in the winter due to the cold. I usually get vibrations in the morning for the first few miles and then it goes away.

It sounds like it could be a few different things. Take it to the dealership and have them troubleshoot it. Make sure to stay with them for any test-driving they do when they try to recreate the problem. Here's a few options of what it might be.

1) The tires developed "flat spots" from sitting too long, but I'm not sure since you said the car was delivered to the dealership on 1/29 and you picked it up yesterday. It's not likely, but that could be the case. If it is flat spots and they don't go away with some regular driving (typically they do unless the flat spots are really bad), you'll need to ask the dealership to replace the tires on their dime.

2) The tires might not be balanced correctly on the wheels and a simple dismount of the tires and remount/balance would solve this. Have them check the little wheel weights at the same time. Some of them may have fallen off at some point. The dealership would also need to take care of this out of their pocket.

If it's not one of those things, then it could possibly be suspension related, but I think that's unlikely.

If you don't have any luck with the dealership, I'd be happy to take a ride with you (I'm up in Westchester County) to get a feel for what it might be.

It's hard to tell if it's a problem because I don't know how hard it's doing it for you. The car normally will be a little rough on the suspension when not completely warmed up suspension components are taken on the highway, but never to the point where my hands go numb.

As stated above, wheel balance/alignment or it could be as simple as tightening the bolts down on the rims, previous owner of my car didn't fully tighten the rims onto the hub so it was vibrating against that
