I thought it looked ugly at first as well, but now i'm kinda used to it, but I wouldn't miss it if it was gone, haha!

It isn't that bad but I find it funny that people think it will will give them that much extra protection. The fact that it is bolted/screwed to the other bumper means there will be damage regardless. You might be extra protected from shopping carts up the wazoo, though.

Bumper will still crack but save for a high speed collision it offers much more protection for the trunk.

I highly doubt that extra piece of plastic is rated for a high speed collision. What is the rear crash beam rated at? 15mph? I suppose I'm comparing my IX to the X, and there are probably big differences.
