if its long and thin it could be picking up RF interference. unsheilded cables dont work great for audio.

Are plugging into the headphone jack on the iPod?

And I get the background noise as well. I think it's something with the iPod's themselves that's responsible. I get the same static on my Bose iPod dock when the iPod's docked, whether it's playing (i.e. on) or not (off). It's especially noticeable (irritating) at low volumes.

what kinda cable is it? If the cable is complete crap that could be an issue (like stated above). Are the connections solid? Everything pushed in all the way and such...

I don't have any problems. Check the volume setting on the iPod itself. It has to be about 3/4 volume. If it's to loud you get noise and if it's to quiet you get humming or static sound.

I've also tried playing around with different settings, and the headphone vs. the data port without any luck. It's disappointing someones getting the same interference with the iPhone as well. Anyone tried calling/emailing Apple?
