EVO stumbling?

I'm about to buy an Evo within a week or two. I've only test driven one Evo.It was a 2004 GSR with 19,xxx miles and had an Invidia TBe,3in red silicon(i think?) upper I/C piping,AEM CAI and Hotchkis sways. When the car was idling at 1k it would sometimes stumble a bit to about 850-900 then go back up to a smooth idle. Is this normal? No CEL's were on.

Also, the transmission shifted fine, with no grinds, but was kind of notchy. It seemed as if there was either an aftermarket clutch or short shifter. Is this normal? This was at a Ford dealership ( was traded in for a 2006 mustang) so they don't have a list of mods. Everything i mentioned was what i was able to see.Thnx for all the help.

Soon to be an EVO owner!

best bet if you are seriously considering the car would be to contact the previous owner for details. anything anyone can give you here is just a guess.

in a nutshell i am saying they will be able to tell you if that was "normal" for that specific car.

Buy that thing at your own risk. If it was already modded, then it is probably going to be a poor purchase decision, because it was likely raced, driven hard, beaten, and not taken care of properly. If it has an intake with no tune, then it could be causing the stumbling, but I would suggest not messing with it.

ok. so i shouldn't even bother with the modded evo. That's what i was thinking but the low miles had me guessing. I also found a 2003 with 27k miles for 21,000.Does that sound reasonable. All it has is an exhaust and dynoflash for 93octane.

Thnx again for the help. Now off to another Mitsu dealership for some STOCK test drives.

i agree with war, buy at your own risk.

if you are equipped to troubleshoot, perform maintenance, acquire parts, and generally deal with an unknown modded car, you *might* pull it off.

if, however, warranty means something, and you cannot deal with a modded pre-owned car, then just walk away.

even the second one sounds like somone might have raped it for a while, taken the mods off, and traded it in.

caveat emptor.

Your Evo stumbles, but it runs GREAAT? That's an oxymoron.

nah I would be just sitting there and I hear spuddering, but this thing will break your neck. I don't know how to explain it. Lil stumbling isnt bad....most highly tuned cars bubbles alittle. I have seen 11 sec evo spudder ever so slightly.

Uhm, they don't "spudder" (not a word, by the way). They may have a lopey idle, but regardless, your car is not a highly tuned car or whatever. You should not stumbling or stuttering ever.

You don't know my car so therefore you don't know if it highly tuned or not, for all you know I run high 11's..........but I don't lol.......Your lopey description isn't any different from my bubbly idle lol you are just looking for something to argue about....I am just trying to reassure him that it isn't anything major.......There isn't anything wrong with my evo aswell

only one way to decide this, duel to the death. But in all reality modding the car yourself is just fine, but buying one modded with no warranty is asking for problems. I test drove an evo with a bov, and a turbo timer, im willing to bet that all other aftermarkets were stripped off for the sale, anyway it had a blown clutch and screw a car with a blown clutch at 27000 miles, especially with a VTA BOV.
