Break In
OK just got a new ix i know what mitsu says as far as break in. i want to know what you guys think about it. im not sure about the evo but i think there is some credit to the break it in the way you want to drive it throry but at the same time there must be a reason for what mitsu say. I have also talked to a tung shop, and tey told me to drain the sythetic out and replace with normal 10w-30 for 1000 miles then put synthetic back in it on the premis that the rings will seat better it seems like there is some merrit to that. What have you done? all replys will be greaty appreciated.

no full throttle for 600 miles and stay below 5000 rpm for 600 miles....if u want to be extra careful keep it going to 1000 miles.
But dont granny shift it either....there are some that shift at 3k which bogs the motor and give it some gas but not full throttle. Break in the brake pads also.

I drove mine quite hard for the first 20 miles then backed off keeping the revs below 5000 until 600 miles and changed to synthetic...
The reason for which i drove it hard is because the new piston rings dont match the bore perfectly so by hammering it for the first few miles you push those rings hard against the bore creating a good tight seal and the first miles are critical to acheive this .....better compression...more power
I pull ahead of my freind who has an ix and this could well be the break in technique
my 2 cents.. good luck

Do go easy, but in the past I've had great results by letting the rpm's climb slowly. Don't rev it like crazy or mash the gas up to redline, but let the motor know what's going on by letting it climb up there nice and gradually.

You will get mixed opinions, some say drive it like you stole it as long as you let the oil completely warm up. Others will say don't go in boost or above 4k rpm for600 miles and never stay at a constant rpm
I think one thing that all break-in methods follow are, Don't drive the car hard until the engine oil is completely warmed up, and don't cruise at a certain rpm for distance

Follow the manual, that way if it blows up, you'll have a better chance with Mitsu on the warranty. (just kidding about the blowing-up part, but seriously, follow the manual).

All I did was drive it softly (boosting a little once in a while) until 999 miles, then I floored it on the highway until it hit 1000! Actually the first day, I was already heel-toeing the car...

Would it be wrong to punch it everyonce in a while for a lil bit but not total full throttle durin the process when the oil is warmed up.. And shift above 3k rpm all the time??

You should definitely shift above 3K. If you shift at 3K all the time it will bog your motor down because u will be very low in power band after the shift. Shift at around 4K.
I would say half throttle is safe for the first little while, but I don't think punching it would be the word. You shouldnt be slapping the gas with your foot. Moreso an easy roll onto the throttle.

My past 3 cars have been brand new. I didn't baby them during break in. If i felt like hitting the gas hard every once in a while, I did. I just didn't keep it redlining. A nice 1-2-3 spurt is OK in my book. Spirited sprints are OK, abuse is not.
