im 16, just got an evo 8
Im 16, just got a 2003 evolution VIII, im pretty new to the evos, i just got one as my second car(its a pretty big step up from a 93 civic hb lol). I just wanted 2 no some helpful tips about the cars, and was wondering if i should do any mods.(i was thinking of getting a bov first.) thanx
Ohh man u really should read first... this forum is full of usefull information and day by day it gets harder to find due to these kinds of posts.
But no, dont get a bov first... unless u r just looking for that "cool" sound and dont mind possibly having your car stumble/stall everywhere. Btw what happened to your civic?

Take it from someone thats gone through years worth of time and money on their evo...Try as hard as you can to not give in to the addiction of power mods. First of all, where its a 2003 and your not familiar with it, WAIT. drive it for at least a few weeks and get to know the car. A lot of people modded their cars then parted them out to sell them as stock. You never know what the guy before you did to it. Get to know the car stock first though. A cat back wont hurt but take it easy with the engine. I put A LOT of money and time into my car and I'll be selling it soon(registered in NH now, MA will tell me to screw when I try to do it there). I plan on buying a LOW miles or left over 9 if I can find one and takin it REAL easy the second time around. I wasted a lot of money on things I thought I needed but didn't at first. Just go slow and focus on things you NEED and not WANT. Then again, whatever makes ya happy I guess.
As for the bov, its not a necessity and causes drivability problems if you wanna get one that you can hear. A drop in air filter, Manual boost controller, turbo back exhaust and a TUNE will get you nice gains and keep it reliable and practical at a reasonable price.

You guys are *******s. At 16, the evo is more than you can handle. I understand that you are probably itching like mad to start modding the car but I URGE you not to.
First invest money into a weekend doing HPDE through NASA or some other sanctioning body that rents out tracks and provides instructors that ride along so you can learn from. You need to learn how to handle the car at the limit before you throw on a bunch of mods and go for a drive with friends to show off and end up destroying the car, your life or the life of others.
You probably won't want to swallow what I am saying but if you want to do it right, then listen.
It really is a beast of a car. Enjoy it as is, learn to drive it as is and then after and only after you get a chance to race it on the track start deciding which aspects of its performance you would like to improve on whether it be grip, power, brakes, suspension, etc.
Putting a BOV on your evo as a first mod is asking for a downward spiral of rice-modding that will lead to a beat up, improperly modded evo that you will end up selling, and will end up at a dealership (like most other used evos) for some other poor sucker to buy.
If you have any other SPECIFIC questions, you can feel free to PM me as I most likely will not see this thread again.
Enjoy

wow your 1 lucky person. im also 16 and i wanted an evo since they came to america in 03 but insted i got a talon tsi awd. i did have a 90 lumina before i got the tsi but i could have got a evo cause me and my dad were looking at a 05 electric blue 1 but the guy turned down my dads offer plus anyway i dont think i could handle the stock power of a evo anyways. i like to drive it like i stole it sometimes so its for my own good.
I agree with boltz and let it breathe drive the car abit and get familiar with it. You are new to driving and lack real rode experience and different conditions and it may not seem like it but racing around having some fun with friends can turn out horrible take it from me first hand, by the time I was 17 I totalled 2 cars driving around like a jacka** and pushing the limit of the road and not realizing how cars respond in different road conditions. But other than that have fun and be safe 16+evo= living the dream, so go out and pick up some highschool girls in that thing
Some of these guys have some good points. Before modding, you really need to learn how to handle the car, get the feel for it. Don't race on the streets. Search the forum, there's alot of threads about guys wrecking their Evo. At 35, I even get the urge to beat down some vettes once in a while. Gotta have self control and don't let your friends talk you into anything stupid. Friends are good for that.
Take your time and enjoy the fact you have an evo. I know at 16 I would have loved to have a car like an evo. Dont be like this 16 year old that lives down the street from me and beats the hell out of his new IX MR that mommy and daddy bought him.
