turning up the boost...

When i got my evo i noticed it had a manual boost controller on, but no boost gauge...so i have no idea whether or not the boost has been turned up or turned down...i plan on getting a boost gauge soon, but in the mean time is there a way to be able to tell what im boosting at without a gauge...and how much can i boost on stock internals with out doing harm...i heard 25psi...is that true.

thanks in advance

I wouldn't go past 25psi on stock internals w/o meth. I've been running 24.5lbs for quite a while now on stock block w/stock turbo. There isn't really a way to determine how much boost your running w/o a boost gauge that I know of! Just be easy on it until you get one and hope the previous owner had it properly tuned.

get a boost gauge asap - you can get an autometer for like 50 bucks!

yeah ive been looking at them on lancershop...probably gonna pick one up next friday when i get paid...i honestly feel like its been "De-boosted"...it feels like the used dealer who had it before or the previous owner lowered the boost below stock 18psi...cause me and my buddy went at it and hes stock with a DP back exhaust, and he slowly pulls on me...i have a DP back exhaust and an AEM intake...

Clearly, the car was modded when you bought it. The best you can hope for is that it's tuned for its current boost level. You obviously aren't logging the car. For all you know, it's knocking like crazy as it is. As you're in CA, it should be fairly easy to take the car to an Evo-specific shop for a tune. Regardless, don't play with the boost before you know where you stand.

Edit: Don't automatically trust a boost gauge. Many aren't terribly accurate. Depending on how the car is tuned, a few PSI off could actually make you go slower by forcing the ECU to pull timing, and cause unnecessary stress on the engine.

oh trust me bro, i didnt plan on touching it untill i can get a tune and figure out how much im currently running...if anything i might have it removed, untill im ready to turn it up...im not about to blow my motor...i aint that stupid...and i know gauges are not 100% accurate cause my friend has a defi gauge and hes running stock boost and sometimes it will say hes boosting 18, other days its lower, other days its higher...i know it spikes at 20 but his gauge jumped higher by like 2pounds once...

My advice:
1. Lower the boost or remove the MBC, and put the vacuum lines back to stock. If you don't know how to do either, don't touch it for now.
2. Get a boost gauge.
3. Find someone with a tactrix cable and a laptop to check the current flash and log the car.
4. If all looks good, slowly turn up the boost. On 91 octane, I rarely see people boosting past ~22psi on the stock turbo.
5. Read, learn, upgrade, and tune as necessary. Or, take it to a reputable shop (i.e. RRE) and have them tune it.
