The SST - It's an Automatic, is it not?
okay you guys want laymen terms... take your sst evo to an automatic transmission shop... the techs wont have a clue how to work on it... if you take it to a manual transmission shop they will have every tool to break it down and repair it...
so which is it?
but like i said... its not so cut and dry... its not black and white... its ****ing rainbow colored more then anything... mainly because this is gay...
ITS NEITHER...
even the wiki article for DCT says its both automatic and manual.. idk if you guys caught that.
as for needs boost posting the video to refute the fact you dont move gears....
you literally dont... you move a shift level... which acts on a shift rail... that is locked to a shift fork... which moves a collar... which engages a synchronizer... the gears don't actually move...
since everyone wants to speak of educated or uneducated...

My bad. You win.

Does anyone have the ability to look at an entire picture anymore???
Now, if they have not been trained/educated/certified in certain types of transmissions, they will refer you somewhere else. But can we please stop making up BS scenarios?
my mythic land is i am a mechanic... I have an associates in automotive tech... I am ASE master certified... I know there are shops that wont even open up automatics... they r&r nothing else... I know there are a 1000 transmission shops in el paso tx... and a good portion are either manual or automatic... not both...
I don't do automatics... but evo's don't come with em so i am fortunate not to have to...
the moral of this story is i didn't come here to argue and i ended up letting you troll me into this ****... I came here to tell you simply that its not a manual... but its not an automatic...
i am unsub'd because this is a pointless argument...

What a phenomenal waste of zeros and ones.
If you define "automatic" by the presence of a torque converter, then it isn't.
If you define "automatic" by the absence of a clutch pedal, then it is.
If you define "automatic" in some other way, then it's whatever you want it to be.

It occurred to me after I posted that everyone has their own definition of what an automatic is. So it depends on what you consider to be an automatic as to whether or not the SST falls in that category or it's own.
Geez everyone gets so angry and tough on the internet.
All I was doing was posing the question why some of you feel the need to belittle people for calling something what, at the root, it is.
This website has what are called discussion forums. By definition, it's where people can discuss freely whatever they feel like. If this discussion is such a waste of ones and zeros, why does the discussion part of this website even exist?
This thread went to 6 pages and 1000 views in 2 days so clearly there was enough interest in the subject. All of you d-bags who play mr popular on this site are why a lot of people who may have brilliant insight or valuable skills refuse to have anything to do with it.
I saw something that bothered me and it was based on a fundamental question which I posed. I'm sorry a few of you don't agree with my personal conclusion on the matter but **** you (no warning needed, I didn't skate around your expletive filter) for doing exactly what I started this thread about. Clearly you have major insecurity issues and can't simply have a respectable debate about a subject that, no matter what your opinion is, has enough traction to garner plenty of responses.
I'll be sure to unsubscribe from my own thread and only use this website for things I need instead of contributing personal experience/mistakes/knowledge to various "discussion" threads. Thanks for reminding me of how many elitist low priced "sports car" owners there are out there.

If it was a real question, then why are you arguing about the answers so much?
If it was a rhetorical question, then you were asking for a squabble, so don't play the "I'm just asking questions" game now, OK?

Oh, and this is you last warning about the expletives and direct insults.

But it could be worse. I could be so over-confident that I believed that anything that seems curious to me was some kind of fundamental question.
Note: the answer to big questions is always 42.

in my opinion it's an automated manual. i drive mine in s-sport manual like 90% of the time unless i'm cruising on the highway in which case the cruise control doesn't work in sport or super sport.. when it changes gears i cringe every time.. i feel like in normal mode the clutches are just slipping slipping oooh.. maybe it's got it.. nope still slipping away.. the shifts are slow in normal mode.. they may actually not be slipping but more than likely are.
either way my poll choice would be automated manual. i say this because you can be in any gear and just bouce it off the rev limiter all day and it will not change gear automacticly. thus not an auto.

Ah f**k, you got me. You clearly refuted my entire argument by saying that the manual movement of levers and linkages by a human hand directly connected through non-computer based hardware doesn't move literal gears, but moves synchronizers into place which engage different gears.
My bad. You win.

It's like I said before the information that you used was irrelevant to whether or not the SST is a Manual or Automatic.
By the Automatic, Manual, and DCT definitions you posted it is OBVIOUS that the DCT, which if we remember mechanically has more in common with a traditional manual, should have a THIRD category for DCT's instead of being categorized by only Automatic and Manual. It's ironic that the Evolution evolves and people are still stuck on terms that should be evolve themselves. Like you said Automatic's came out a LONG time ago.
So the bottom line MR guys, those of them who get annoyed, get annoyed because the MR is NEITHER an Automatic nor a Manual and should belong in a third category. Whether or not it does officially doesn't really matter I think but when fellow Evo-ers constantly put them down (not saying that you do) it get annoying.
Why you ask? Because it is a kind of hybrid. Just like the Evo XI may or may not be a hybrid, or are we gonna have to have a separate discussion on whether it's a petrol car or an electric car?
And as for the people who don't know. People thinking the SST is an automatic and not understanding what it really is, is the same as people looking at your Evo and going is that thing turbo'd? They have no clue what the Evo is so they obviously have no idea what makes it run. That being said people what to tell funny stories so let them. Don't facepalm when someone who cant tell your Evo apart from a Subi doesn't know it's a 2.L 4
I think this question has been answered. Good discussion though
Sorry for the long post guys.
