It's Official: 2006 Last 4G63, New Evo X Engine: 4B11T
alot would be riding on mitsubishi doing well with the X. but if it looses purists to an increased market share, it will probably live with that quite happily.
producing a tune ready engine is not their goal. they aim to be a profitable entity. sad perhaps, but a reality of business.

If I was rich though, I'd take the BR450X with a 4G transplant and some kind of anti-volvo front end body kit.
Right. Look at the recent Best Motoring features that have had the 07 sti or evo IX when it came out. Their main targets are no longer within Japan. They are striving for these models to be true one on one competitors against C55 and E55 mercedes, and M series cars for BMW. Audi as well. In fact they bring those cars out everytime to compete when testing these new Japanese models. They seem to care a lot more of how theyre doing against the european models then pushing technology for race use.
In the same way that the direct injected motor in the Mazdaspeed 3 is not like the standard motor in the regular 3 and the motor in the ZO6 vette is not like the motor in a pickup, the motor in the X will most likely be rather unlike the run of the mill Lancer motor.
It will most likely have a stronger block and will surely have forged bits all over and a much better head with a lower CR to eat up the boost.
In short don't worry just yet, Mitsu has too much to lose to make the car a dog.

If they do something special with different sleeves or even a slightly different casting for the Evos it would mean the end of this sort of modularity and might make building an Evo motor a bit more expensive of a proposition.
Its all about capitalism which many of you love so much... economies of scale and over pricing are the ways that corporatons get rich... many car makers are trying to have their engines used in many different models to increase profit i dont mind as long as the engines are good..
Mitsu also needs to use a newer engine cause critics will say that they are lagging behind technicaly from the competition. Kind of like why BMW had to redsign the body style of the new 3ers. (which dont look as goos as any E46s..)

I agree, but mitsu does not have a huge following due to your daddy had one or a huge following due to quality. More and more high HP AWD cars (and trucks, look at the new toy 1/2 ton with almost 400 HP) coming out. If the X loses it's "edge" and ultimately it's cult base, why buy it over another AWD car. Don't matter to me, as there is no way I'll ever spend $30K on a car again. Long as they don't go out of business so I can get parts down the road, I'm happy.

Mitsu probably needs one and only one thing to bolster sales here with where they could make a little more phat profit: Another fancy luxury name and some fancy plastics and sometimes another 'chance' at doing car designs under a different name.
I have to admit the US has finally an "image is everything" culture willing to put quite a bit of extra money on maintaining that image.
Nissan has Infiniti
Toyota has Lexus
Honda has Acura
Heck Subaru has now got the Saabaru going.
The 'refinement' from one name on the vehicle over another is for all intents and purposes minimal, but the profits and the customer base willing to take the "Luxo" to the dealer is much higher.
Good luck Mitsu ... we need you.

Sad to see Mitsu do away with the 4G series motor. But, maybe the new one will do better in its place.
Example: Honda introduced the K-series replacing the B-series, people thought they were doomed! Now, everyone and their dog wants a K-series swap. They can make more power, and are more efficient than the B-series.
Lets hope for the best and maybe the possibilities will be endless just like the 4G.
