They could always overcome it with horsepower and the fact that the rest of the car didn't weigh that much. When you are building a Ferrari or Lamborghini a 2.0L 4cylinder just won't do. Its got to be a 3.5-6.0L+ V8, V10, or V12. If you build an enigne like that out of iron, its going to be much much heavier then a 4cyl so it becomes much more critical to lighten the rest of the car, or much more of a weight savings to use aluminum. Most of those cars are N/A too.

Safety regs have forced Evos to get heavier and heaiver to the point where using a aluminum block is required for them to make the car overcome it. Now they are tilting it back towards the center of the car and hanging the turbo in the back for better weight distribution. I am sure they are using more aluminum now more then ever, and with more power I am confident they will be able to improve the car over the IX as they promised.
Ummm .. when using alumimum as a structural element .. it doesn't end up being dramatically lighter. Fundamentally lighter yes .. but other factors such as heat transfer and corrosion resistance make it very viable for automotive engine use. I think that's what you're saying here .. just not entirely clear.

One of the biggest factors in hanging a turbo off of the back is cat light off. They want that 0.005% (exaggerated) better emissions on cold startup and that's why the flip on a lot of these motors towards a exhaust manifold coming out the back, close to the firewall. To me, its stupid. Turbo packaging 'can' be much less forgiving there. I'd rather build a very smooth free flowing exhaust package with good internals, but long live the marketeers!

The pictures offer a lot of help in understanding what the EVOX is coming out like, but there is a lot not seen until one actually gets here.

The motor is not flipped as you can see in the picture. I doubt that it is a 2.3, but that could be interesting....

its flipped in the sense that if you flipped the motor around so the exhaust manifold is up front, it would look like a DSM motor configuration (with timing belt on the drivers side). I think that is what he meant.

Copied from an intelligent IX owner:

No 4G63T. They replaced it with a 2.0 I4 that's ALUMINUM and has a FULLY OPEN DECK. This means it can't hold boost at all plus the bottom end will be half as strong (one of the real benefits of the 4G63T is it's amazingly stout). The modification potential will almost certainly be crap. I can guarantee you a IX (or even an 06-07 WRX) with bolt-ons will rape it. Basically, it looks like they built a 2.0L 2zz engine and added a mild amount of boost to top it to 300hp.

Also, it has stability control that will come in and brake the rear wheels if the car begins to oversteer and breaks rear traction which will probably lead to slower lap times with good drivers because of the loss of ability to power over.

oh lord.. so the evo X will be just like the sti? Oh say it aint so. I hope like hell that It is at least sleeved or else, forget 10 sec stock block evo 10s. Plus the car is 200 lbs heavier. Does anyone know the compression numbers? Oh btw the appear to have switched form the advans to dunlop tires. If you look closely at the pics it shows dunlop on the tire wall.

Well, I was talking strictly about the engine, but the same holds true for the stucture of the cars. They have been using aluminum to lighten things up, like the hood, fenders, roof, suspension bits. Car's like the NSX come to mind when aluminum is used to the extreme to be very light, as do most current exotics. And of course the use of carbon fiber. Every gram counts and when its a exotic the price isn't an issue. Mitsubishi is going to have to keep finding ways to keep the Evo cheap and competitive and going to an all aluminum frame and body panels to see a dramatic improvement just isn't viable yet.

I know at least one yuppie from LI that will buy it and never do much in mods to it. He won't care what engine is in it (as long as the specs look good on paper and it's fast enough). Since it's going to be partially automatic, and to the non-informed still have the mistique of an evolution, it may sell like crazy for the first year or 2.

this sounds more like a AWD tiburon with NOS than a 10th generation evo!

4G63 is definately a proven block there is no doubt about that. the new 4B11T may not be iron cast or closed deck but at the end of the day we still dont know about its potential. its all speculation at this point.

also coming from jersey, you are EXACTLY right... these will not stay on lots... the car is a year away and we already have 50+ threads dedicated to it! I will be buying one, and I will not be modding it until someone shows us what the limits of the stock engine are. Of course being in NYC metro area, you know the manumatic options is a real selling point, while still allowing me to have fun on the open roads of upstate! for every customer mitsu losses of the die-hard fans, they will gain 2 new enthusiasts!

Turbo is between the engine and firewall. Intake is in front on this new motor. That is why there is a vent on the hood at the back and (probably) behind the front tires on the front fenders.

This sucks IMHO. Maybe I won't give a fug once they start heating this thing up for us all to see. I want to see the turbo glow orange/white in front of the firewall

alot would be riding on mitsubishi doing well with the X. but if it looses purists to an increased market share, it will probably live with that quite happily.

producing a tune ready engine is not their goal. they aim to be a profitable entity. sad perhaps, but a reality of business.
