custom is the way to go and will save you money and teach you a lot about your car and how it works.

subie update:
the engine will be coming out sunday or monday now. but subaru meet here this coming weekend that im going to attend ao obviously im not going to do it then. this will be a fun little project to get it out but the next project is to get it up a flight of stairs and then onto my engine stand in my apartment.

ok so i retract all previous statements on this car..... it is a pos. everything is rusted together and will not budge. this is really starting to tick me off. tried separating the lower ball joint from the arm and that is stuck in there and the cotter pin sheared off inside so now i gotta figure something out with that. the dang bolts that hold the strut in are stuck in there, the nuts came off, but the bolts wont move even with some persuasion...the engine should have been out by now and i should have been doing other work to it not fighting with a few bolts and some cv axles. so far this is the WORST car i have ever owned to work on!!!!

well i was able to finally get one of the 2 bolts out of the trans that needs to come out. the other one (below the turbo on the passenger side) even with the cv axle moved out of the way still wont come out. so its 2 fully charged batteries for the impact and back at it monday. the only other thing thats in the way is still the front o2 sensor but, idk if thats coming out or not, i might have to tilt the engine in order not to snap it off when removing, cuz its in there and the way that subaru designed that how it sits in ther is a pos imo. so that and when i do get the engine out im gonna amke that hole a bit bigger so that i can get an o2 sensor socket in there to get it out.

i have basically "wasted' my entire vacation trying to get this pos out and i still havent gotten it out. this is a 7hr job in and out for a shop and ive spent at least 15 or so just trying to get it out.

now granted ive learned a lot about how the soob works and the design but there is still a lot of head scratching when doing this as well and specially for me with it being my first soob as well.

now for the one bolt still stuck in the bottom strut mount, i dont need to get it out to pop the cv axle from the trans but im still gonna do it for the sake of doing it down the road for coilovers or something maybe...

you should try to soak it in some penetrating lube just to see if you can get it out... thats what I did with the rear O2 sensor that POS would not come out if I had 20 mins of life left in me. Sorry I couldnt make it to your place josh we got back to racine around 5:30, and my grandparents got tired. When I come back to Wisconsin I will most likely drive and put some miles on the turbo and break in the car. Good luck with the scoobie

Battery powered impact wrenches have never been worth more than a few screws to hold my lcd monitor mount to the wall. If i need to get at a bolt on the car, it's pneumatic all the way....and 1/2" with 250ft lbs of torque, none of that sissy 3/8" stuff.

Also, when that doesn't work, I take 1 cresent wrench, and link it onto the end of another to double my leverage....that's also how I snapped the stud on my turbo too though (heck, I'm glad i did, cause it's so much better now)

My electric plug in impact has 260 ft ibs it works good for most exhaust and wheel lugs but definately pneumatic for the tough jobs my craftsman pro has 710 ft Ibs of break away torque using my 1/2' air line nothing I have found yet has stopped it.

well finally back from door county. the soon to be wife and i went up there for a weekend getaway and a perfect way to end my week of vacation.

for reference my electric impact is a dewalt 1/2" 18v with 300ft/lbs of torque. i unfortunatly dont have an air compressor to have a pnuematic impact. it has gotten all but a total of 2 bolts off on the rusted rust and bolts off the scoobie (the one still in the trans/engine and one in the lower strut mount on the passenger side).

and yes i have been using blaster but for the one on the engine/trans it wont work because the bolt s about 4" long and the threads are at the way end of the bolt. trust me i wish that blaster would work.

That's a serious battery powered device! I didn't know they had such powerful ones. How many tick tick ticks does it get out on one charge if you don't mind me asking? 5 bolts? 50?

tell ya the truth idk for sure. i just go until it seems like it just got fixed (no ***** anymore).

if you are looking for a serious electric but it is quite a few benjamins, i think its matco that makes a 700 some ft/lbs of torque!

and i know milwaukee makes one at like 325 last i knew.

Benjamins are not my thing...I got the craftsman compressor as a gift about a year ago, and have since then spent about 70 bucks at harbor freight to get an impact, a 90degree ratchet, tons of impact sockets, a spray painter, and some new easy to use higher grade air hoses. It's been fairly useful so far, but only after I returned the initially purchased 3/8" ratchet that barely put out 100ft/lbs if I put it over the recommended pressure....why the box says "75ft/lbs at 90 psi, 95 ft/lbs at 120 psi....*caution* maximum working pressure, 90 psi" I will never know...

anyhow, swapped that for the 250 or whatever 1/2" one and it's much better at bustin the bolts.

i would have an air compressor and and air impact but since i live in an apartment right now with no garage, well that pretty much sums it up right there. thats why i got the electric and technically it cost me like 25 bux or so because the rest was gift cards from grandma and my parents for chrismas last year.
