This pic does help, ours is almost the same. I just did it in the parking lot at work, and no kidding, it took me about 8min with a pair of pliers. Piece of cake!
The quote above was how I did it and I didn't need any other parts, and as I said, just a angled needle nose plier. I drove around some and as was stated, I didn't notice the sluggish throttle response as much after the engine got hot and I didn't experience any problems, engine idled and ran fine.
A coupler would be easiest but I just yanked the short hose out and connected the end of the long hose (still attached at the block) to where the short was attached (on engine). I used the existing clamps.

The popular opinion on the thread you linked was that it is not necessary to block them because they don't do anything but provide a path for the coolant to flow, so I left mine unplugged. I will probably go back later and put vaccum plugs on them, as one guy did, just to play it safe, but they do not draw a vaccum so there realy is no way for anything to get in there.
This has turned into a pretty useful thread once we got past the standard sarcasm.
