RamAir update
RamAir update
A few guys have asked me to keep them updated on my RamAir project, so here I go. The first version of the Ram air was assembled and installed on my car last weekend. The piping consists of 3" Pvc pipes that goes from the front bumper to the front of my air filter.
At first I had a huge leak where the pipe is attached to the front bumper, but I could still notice a nice improvement on the highway. I have a Vaccum gauge on my steering column and I know I'm hitting 0 vaccum quicker than I used to.
Yesterday I fixed the leak and my piping is now almost airtight. Took it out for a spin later in the night and god what a difference. Just like any other RamAir system the acceleration geats greater and greater as I'm going faster and getting more air ramed into the piping. I might be wishful thinking, and telling my-self I see improvement, but one thing is for sure. The air filter stays cold. I'm the kind of person who pops the hood every once in a while after a drive juste to make sure everything is still holding up correctly under the hood. Before the RamAir my filter used to be really hot(being a Sri). I poped the hood this morning after a 40 minute drive and the filter was cold. Not warm, but cold. Which leads me to beleive there is actually a fair amount of air going through the piping to the intake.
I currently have a few 90° angles in my piping to properly reach the front bumper. I feel one or two of them might be restricting airflow. Part of my air filter is also exposed to ambiant air, and I think I might be loosing quite a fair amount of the air flow brought by the RamAir. But having the filter exposed in such way helps when going slower. I still have a few variants I can play with in the system configuration, so I'll most likely spend the weekend on that and find which setup is providing the best results.
Overall benefits so far:
- The airfilter stays cold meaning the air entering the engine is colder and most likely more dense.
- Acceleration seems to be improved across the whole "powerband" espescially at highway speed.
And to make sure I'm not just wishful thinking I planned on going to the track this weekend and I'll see what it sums up to in numbers. Last time I ran 16.702 with Kamikaze, Sri, Custom CatBack. So we'll see what I can do this weekend with this addition.
I'll keep you guys update.

anyways a ram air should be shortest distance to your throtle body just like ones for the hood

No it works. I had the "NASCAR ducting" (uh, dryer venting
) pushing air into my filter for a long time. I've been meaning to reinstall that, but with all the headwork, IM, TB, and eManage work I've been doing, replacing a duct has been sort of at the bottom of the list.
Cheap mod, too
a little screening on the front keeps big stuff from flying in (I drove for a few days without a screen and had peagravel and cigarette butts in there
)

Even though it's sitting on my desk

As stated in my first post... at first I had huge leak where the air was coming in. A gap of about 1" around the circumference of my pipe. Air was getting in but I was loosing alot. Since I filled the gap, I can feel a better throttle response and my vacuum gets to 0 ever faster.
If I'm not mistaken, and I might be, going 100km/h in 5th gear required aproximetly 60%-70% throttle to get a Vacuum reading of 0. Now I can have 20% throttle and still get my 0 Vacuum. Then again... I might be mistaken as those numbers were taken from memories and assumption of throttle percentage.

Seriously though... I currently have no way of accuratly measuring any of those things. All I've got right now is an eye on the Vacuum gauge to see how it reacts, and this morning I got my hand on the filter after a run and felt it was cold(not warm but Cold) even though I had been driving for a while.
Btw, I'm on the market for an Auterra Pda system, or at least the interface cable since the software can most likely be found somewhere on the web.
