RPW Info

I know this has been covered before. RPW says that the JDM 6A13 engine will bolt directly into our Lancers. Obviously, swapping out one American market engine for another is stupid, but swapping out our 2.0L for 2.4TT from the Japanese Galant could be. I have not done much to my Lancer, but this seems like a worthwhile swap if the information is true. Plus, I've seen one on eBay for ~$1500, so they are available.

Please dont flame me, I am merely asking the opinions of those out there with experience in the Lancer engine bay. I'm not trying to be like all those honda guys out there that swap engines in the 89 civic del sols, I am only interested in this because of the mention on RPW's site.

Thanks for any insight guys!

it is a 6A12 motor he is refering to. but the twin turbo motor does NOT fit. you are limited to a N/A 6A12

The Mitsubishi FTO Mivec Engine. V6 Nice. I believe without the turbo it still puts out about 210hp. BUT that's only the Mivec. The regular 6A12 still has about 160hp. Get a custom turbo kit installed and I'd say you have quite a beast for about $7Gs

This is the list copied directly from RPW's site:

RPW suggested Engine Swaps ranked from best to worst:

1.6A13 SOHC 24 valve engine - rated 120kw factory (larger capacity means torque, bolts right into the car, readily & cheaply available)

2.6A12 DOHC 24 valve engine - rated 120kw factory (smaller capacity but better breathing)

3.6A12 DOHC 24 valve Mivec - rated 150kw factory (Our highest recommendation but getting up there in value)

4.4G93 DOHC 16 valve engine - rated 100kw factory (Hard to find but worthwhile to fit.)

5.4G93 DOHC 16 valve turbo - rated 160kw factory (Even harder to find)

6.4G63 DOHC 16 valve turbo - rated 206kw factory (Can be fitted, requires major modifications to balance of vehicle)

Thanks for the information guys.
The 6A12 is an option but not the easiest fit according to RPW. Besides turboing the 4G94, which everyone is doing, is this at least possible? Another question comes to mind during this, how easy is it to pull the current engine out? Would it be a worthwhile idea to build up a 4G94 block outside the car and swap it in when completed?

What about the weight of a V-6. How much more does it weigh? How will this effect the handling of the Lancer? I know nothing about the 6A12, so that is why I ask these questions.

Don't get me wrong, a V-6 Lancer would be nice.

This is exactly my question, obviously these engines are heavier, do I need a beefier front suspension? Will that make it impossibly hard to drive? I've primarily been looking into the fitment in the engine compartment.

The way I look at it, I would think you would need to beef up the suspension. If you switched to full coilovers that you can adjust the dampening rate, my best quest is that may work.

your car would be a lot more nose heavy. i know a guy who swapped a 6A12 into his mirage, and says its really noticable.

Stop. Wait. Let's look at the facts. RPW is an awesome company who tries tries tries to bring us new products based on proven technologies. The problem is they've never seen a USDM Lancer and they base some of their designs off of what would be a US Mirage. Take the TB phenol spacer (missing the tab on he side to cover an inlet) and the anti-lift kit (not even close- ask me how many hours I spent under my car trying to figure out how to make it fit). The 02-03 is close on a lot of parts but the 04-06 is a radical redesign from the old Mirage frame. I wouldn't trust their info for the "7th Gen" Mirage/Lancer body style (which is the 04-06 design). I have much love for RPW but they're fighting uphill because they don't have a car to test on.

I'm not saying don't try, but keep in mind that the V6 is gonna be way heavier than the I4 and you'll probably need a new tranny, control arms, ECU, etc that goes along with any swap. Plus you'll need something akin to the Tein Flex dampers (way stiffer than the SS kit) to keep from bottoming out. Then you have to figure out how to redistribute the weight rearward to keep from having insane understeer (which we already have, BTW and it's enough of a challenge to get the car to drive neutrally with the weight we were given).

good luck but I think you're in for a very difficult swap for not a lot of gain.

Thank you alchemist for your well thought out and intelligent response to my question. This whole idea was merely something I was looking into. Now my only problem is dealing with having Summit Racing 10 minutes from my house and my only connection to RRM through the internet.

rrm has great tech support for turb etc. install is not hard and they are usually always available to assist via their phone. rpw is a little harder lol but they are not the most expensive by far

I thought that list RPW gave had some highlighted parts and had a note next to each one that said something like the 6A13 wouldn't be the best because it would be too much for the car to handle. Something that said which engine gave you a good weight, power and torque that wasnt too crazy.
a little OT, price was mentioned. RPW says all of their prices are in Australian dollars. I converted some of the prices and they came out extremely low. Is that right? If so, how much would shipping on some stuff be from them?
