There is a little lack of information. He would pretty much be getting the whole car as a parts car, not just the engine. The trans, front clip, all wiring. This guys car is totaled it rolled over on its roof 3 times. We would have an entire car sitting here for parts. Also Gator Axles in Florida makes custom axles, it wouldnt be an issue to get 500whp axles made. I havent checked but Quaife or Phantom Grip probably makes a LSD for that trans. Traction isnt the main concern. Someone said earlier we would have to weld in a new subframe. Making new engine mounts is a possibility. I gotta go, I'll check back here later guys.

Quaife, Kaaz, Phantom Grip, B&M all make ATB/LSD/inserts respectively for the DSM tranny.

Why go to all that work on a Lancer ES? They're great cars, don't get me wrong, but what you're talking is insane. You said yourself you didn't want to deal with the increases in the insurance premiums, but that cost is negligable when you consider how much what you're talking about doing is going to cost you. As far as converting the car over to AWD, it would all depend on what you really want your car for. If this is your only car that you drive, and you just want something that'll be fun and fast, you might want to consider it.

I mean, would it be a sad day to look back on when you pass the point where the value of your car plus all the time, energy, money, downtime is more than the cost of an Evolution? You sound like you're seriously wanting to get crazy, which isn't a bad thing, it's just that if you want to get crazy, you may end up halfway through, needing to spend another $5K, and wishing you had just started with an Evolution.

1. The reverse orientation. The two motors sit on opposite sides of the engine bay. You're either going to have to install the motor backwards or weld in an entire new front subframe.

2. You say the engine has 300whp now, but it is "stock." What turbo is it, what mods does it have? A "stock" DSM engine has around 170whp. To get to three hundred you need a significant amount of mods.

3. You say the DSM engines are rated to 550whp before "you really have to start modding them." Both 1G and 2G engines can get to like ~400whp before opening them up, with the 1G being able to handle it better. Most people don't feel comfortable pushing a 2g much past 375whp. To get 550 at the wheels forged internals are a *MUST*

4. I hope you have a lot more then the $2000 if a 550whp DSM powered Lancer is your goal. Good luck.
Thank you, voice of reason.

If you can do the swap, hey more power to you, but why you think it's more practical than working with what you've got is beyond me. Good luck. You're going to need it.

I was hoping you'd have said something. After reading the first page now I'm working from the back to front.

I don't think an AWD conversion was ever in consideration. We are just saying it will be tough getting the motor in and it will cost a lot more then just the typical old Mirage DSM swap, or New Mitsu Evo swap which are all straightfoward engine, ECU and harness jobs - no serious fabrication needed.

But hey, HASport puts KA's into last gen Civics, so maybe there is something to this. IF you guys can develop some sort of OTC kit maybe you will start a revolution. That is until a ready supply of salvaged USDM Evo engines makes it obsolete.

But if your looking for inspiration, heres a guy who has a 89 Mirage/Lancer FWD converted to AWD then he dropped a 4g63 with the Turbo and all- ALL IN HIS BACKYARD!

Hope this works out for ya.

you can still pick up an evo IV - VIII motor and trans, and still use it for fwd only. there's a mod to do to the center diff. I've never seen it done, but talk to AMS, they have to do it every time they dyno an awd car.

That lilevo site is quite inspirational, but keep in mind he's using DSM parts in a car with the correct orientation.

I didn't know you could convert an AWD tranny to FWD (and back again), I know people do it for dyno purposes, I just didn't think it was something you could drive around on for an extended amount of time - but I've also heard that AWD tranny's don't always fit into Mitsu that came factory FWD. But since you are straight custom this probably won't matter.

Some JDM trannys from GVR4's are switchable from AWD to FWD (as an easier then unhooking things from under a GSX or Evo to run it on a 2wd dyno). But I have no experience on how they work.

this is the scary stuff you'd have to do for an AWD conversion
