Insane Engine Swap

Well I just got a deal tonight that I couldnt pass up. Im going to be doing an engine swap from my 4g94 to a talon tsi 4g63bt. Im getting the engine and everything I need for $2,000. I will keep everyone up to date as things move along and the swap take progress. Looking from going to about 90-100 whp to about 220-300whp depending on how much boost I run and what setup I decide to run.

I seriously am doing this I have to get the money which may take a month or two but come hell or high water this will be done. I wont be able to give an estimated time as my car will have some down time to have all this completed but I promise that when this is all said and done I will have pics as well as a dyno sheet posted up for everyone to drool over. Sad thing is the engine has about 300whp and it has not had any internals done. So of course as soon as I get the engine the internals will be getting done as well. These engines are rated to handle about 550 horsepower before you really have to start modding them.

I know exactly what I am getting myself into. As well as the mechanics at the shop I go to are pretty insane dudes and capable of just about anything. I have seen them do motor swaps and I also have seen them completely rebuild engines so I have no worries.

Really good dude I know im looking at some serious down time but this in my honest opinion will be a better setup then trying to mod the 4g94 to that type of horsepower. Like I said this engine is stock and depending on the boost setting is capable of putting out about 300 horsepower. After the engine swap and some bills are paid off I will be looking down the road to do all the internals and go with a bigger turbo setup. Getting me well over 400 horses.

well, i hope you are able to do it. DSM motors are one of my favorites. if that motor does fully function in your car you might start a trend for many more people.... like H22s in accords. good luck

Man I hate to burst your bubble - but here are some problems I think you have not addressed, and if so then please share how:

1. The reverse orientation. The two motors sit on opposite sides of the engine bay. You're either going to have to install the motor backwards or weld in an entire new front subframe.

2. You say the engine has 300whp now, but it is "stock." What turbo is it, what mods does it have? A "stock" DSM engine has around 170whp. To get to three hundred you need a significant amount of mods.

3. You say the DSM engines are rated to 550whp before "you really have to start modding them." Both 1G and 2G engines can get to like ~400whp before opening them up, with the 1G being able to handle it better. Most people don't feel comfortable pushing a 2g much past 375whp. To get 550 at the wheels forged internals are a *MUST*

4. I hope you have a lot more then the $2000 if a 550whp DSM powered Lancer is your goal. Good luck.

http://www.rpw.com.au/ has engine swap info.

the best thing you can do without spending 10 grand or so is to get a ralliart engine and mod it.

What I mean is that the blocks themselves are rated for up to 550 horsepower before any drastic work would have to be done to the block and internals. As far as the motor I was told that it was stock. I am sure it is not as to the fact that I did some research after I made that post and at max a stock dsm can put about 210 horsepower. I will keep everyone updated on whats going on and if this is do-able or not.

But that's just it, that's the point I addressed in my first post. The block, by itself is rated to just about whatever you can throw at it. There are 7,8 even 900hp examples. That's the good thing about a stout iron block. The internals (pistons, rods, etc) on a stock DSM can only handle about 400hp. Oh sure, you'll hear stories about guys pushing 425+, but they only do it to gain notoriety on a dyno and then they turn it back down. You'll have to do "drastic" work to attain these levels and keep your engine together. There are several shops that offer built six-bolt engines that can handle these power levels. I would not pay $2000 for a used engine from a DSM, especially if it is a 7-bolt (95-99MY) if I had your goals. I would buy a built 6-bolt from one of these vendors as it is already built with your goals in mind:

http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/index.htm

http://www.slowboyracing.com/shop.php?sid=&cat=36

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/

Or if you have mad loot:

http://www.ffwdconnection.com/

If you insist on buying this used engine, and it is a 7-bolt - make sure you check the crank from endplay. Just keep in mind that most DSMers who are after 450+whp usually switch to 6-bolts. Most engine builders avoid building 7-bolts entirely. However, the 7-bolt turbo 4G64 is a fairley new concept and may be something to look in too. I might try this myself one day with my Galant with all the spare parts I have laying around.

But, that still does not addess the vast obstacle of attaining your goal, which is the intense amount of fabrication required in putting a reverse oriented engine in your car.

Here's what someone had to do to get a Evo IV motor into an Evo III. Its the same idea you have, just backwards and it most certainly is not a daily driver. In other words, you should put that 2 grand into getting an Evo IV+ motor for your car. Then you'll start off with bigger injectors ~510cc's and a big 16G turbo, both of which will get you close to 400whp with minimal bolt ons, some race gas and GOOD tuning. The T-25 that comes stock with late model DSM's is good to about 250whp max.
