I got it professionally installed, with the iPod cable running to the center console under the armrest for $300. I plug the iPod in and never have to touch it, since the HU controls it; it has a text display, so I always know what's going on. When I have a track playing, I cna choose if I want it to display the song name, artist name, album title or just how long it's been playing. I'm VERY happy with this unit and how well it sounds.
awesome deal man , wanna get some pix on here so i have something to give me some ideas?
id like to see what the pros do before i go and rip apart some consoles

the hu i bought of 1.8t will be here around tuesday, but i am still a student and a full time data entry clerk, so i wont be able to tinker with it til that thursday or friday night. I just wanna say thanks to everyone who has been offering ideas and help, it really shows how awesome this forum really is. makes me proud to be a lancer owner.

its just the cable, you need the interface adapter too.
which is another 100+ from them.
best bet was going aftermarket for me.
saved me at least 50$

thanks,
i put a lot of planning in to this, and its still in the design aspect,
i have a few people who have pm'd me about this and how they wanna make a custom design for it.
so far, i will just go with what i have for the arm-rest mod.
Ill take some pictures along the way and maybe otter or one of the other mods can make it a sticky in the DIY.

But heres the update,
1.8t sent the hu via ups, and it is scheduled for delivery on april 10th.
so thursday or friday afternoon will be the day. Plus i also have to change the tranny oil too.
stay tuned, this adventure is almost over.

so the HU is supposed to be here today,
anywhere between now and 7pm.
well i did some measurements and math and such.
the cable for the adapter is 4 and 3/4 feet long, and is not detatchable...

SO...

if i want to do the under the armrest mod, this isnt going to work, for two reasons.

see image below.

if you look at the head of the unit, it is huge. and that cable to it is mammoth as well... no way to make that look inconspicuous with the reversed armrest.

another issue is if i want to drill a hole in the bottom of that console under the armrest... i am making a pretty fair sized gap right there... dont know how i feel about that....

anyone want to throw a few ideas my way... this is starting to get discouraging.

If you are good with wires and soldering, you might be able to cut the wire to thread through a smaller hole, but that might not be the best idea. You could have a custom piece made somehow to mount the ipod. Hmm, this might be tough.

not a prob for the ipod.

Here is where this becomes adventurous.
I want to reverse the arm rest,
mount the ipod on the inside of it
(flips open and theres Ipod)
and I want to have it recieve a charg while its in there.

I dont know if anyone else agrees with me on this,
but I HATE having wires in my car,
So i dont want to use the Lighter power unit.
does anyone have a wiring diagram for the 04 RA's
cause i want to turn a car charger in to a "car charger".

I know were talking changing DC to AC etc.
Anyone have any ideas? Im really excited about this and it will look sweet in the end.

(also wanna get the radar detectors cable off the dash too and do the same to that.)
im sure this has already been said but they sell adapter kits that plug right into the cigarette lighter.

...what are you talking about?
if you are thinking FM transmitter, i think you need to read up about 6 pages.

and for the update.

so ups pulled a lame one today.
they didnt ship my hu from NJ on time.
so when it got here in buffalo at 2:19pm
needless to say, the truck to deliver said package, had left the hub already.
thus, leaves me to wait til tomorrow...
(insert sad rant here)
well tomorrow is a new day, full of school and work.
(to think i too sick time to come and install it too...)

Ill have pictures and all that fun stuff when this all finally goes through.
tomorrow... (hopefully)

You should learn to solder, its not hard and extremely useful, and cheap too. This could be your first project! If you don't like that monstrous wire, you could chop it off and solder in a real ipod wire thats smaller!

But id love to see the 180 degree lid idea. I'v been needing an alternative to the cup holder for my mp3 player for awhile now.

no i know how to,
i took a circuitboard repair class cause i was a pc repair major for a semester.
but if i slice that cord open, no return if anything else goes sour.
and soldering is good stuff, i just wont cut that cable for now.

and i wanna do that 180 degree lid too.
but that cable will be exposes and i dont think it will look all that professional if it is visible.
im gonna take it to work and talk to this old motor head i share an office with.
hes been all about this project too, drawing up schematics with me and crap.

also i hate having any wires in my car...
and idea how i can keep that pesky cable from my radar detector off my headunit...
its kind of a pain in my butt.

If you could and havent though of it already, if you got one of those dock things for an ipod and mounted it in there, there'd be no exposed wires, and would hold it nicely and look clean.

update.
2 days and 2/3ds into done.

so first i will show you basic installation, where you would just plop the ipod into your glove box and pretty much forget about it. (this has a downside, ill go over that later.)

Day one.

anyone who doesnt know how to take out the stock unit (i didnt til otter)
you need to pull the 3 knobs off of your center console.
the heat and direction knobs will reveal one philips head screw each, remove these.
then take a butter knife (hey its what i used) and a cloth so as to not scratch anything, and put it in the top right corner of the silver trim, and go around the entire trim until it is easy to remove.

At this point it should be self explanitory, take screws off, take unit out. and unplug the wiring harness and the radio.

on the side of the unit you will see this (but it will be philips head, this is my aftermarket hu, but for learning purposes.

you need to remove those and keep the bracket because you will have to put them on your aftermarket one.

(*note*) this was a HUGE pain in the butt because the stock screws did not fit my aftermarket one, so home depot was my savior.

now that this is all screwed on.
you need to have to either
1 (hard) hard wire the wires together
or
2 (easy) buy a wiring harness
(like so)

and just plug this into your (whte) wiring harness that comes factory

so far this has all been a basic installation.

at this point otter told me something about using washers so your aftermarket hu sits flush with the trim...
i didnt figure it out.

hense why i dont have the silver trim around my hu.

here is the ipod part,
so this little black box is what makes this all work.
what sucks is it need to be powered and doesnt go into the wiring harness.
the big problem was grounding the ground. I just used electric tape to tape it to a metal surface in the back of the of the dashboard.
next was splicing the yellow power cable (cutting the yellow cable from the wiring harness in half, strip all 3 cables and then use a wire nut and keep them all connected. repeat this step for the ground wires.

once that is done, you need to connect the black box to the back of the hu.
now here is an easy way to not make a stupid mistake like i did.
blue to blue, black to black. I plugged the in-port in the right port on the back of the hu, but not on the black box, so it detected my ipod, but i got no sound. dont do that... you will feel stupid calling pioneer like yours truly.
also notice that white cable on the black box is not detatchable. make sure you have the box in a place where you can feed wires through the underbody of your dash.

for a quick stick, i put the box where the passengers feet would be, fed the power plug to down the caverns of the dashboard

(seriously, i had enough room to put my arm up to almost my elbow down there, you should have no trouble. and i fed the white cable up the same slot, and placed it in the glovebox.

and then you turn the car on, press source 2x, and it should say ipod. yay listen.
quick side note, it is ok to disconect the ipod at any time, as it says on the ipods screen. so instead of cycling through the files on your headunit (which will take longer than you may think). so while its disconected, select a song, and plug it back in, press source 2x, and that song and that cd will be playing. I know its a pain when the ipod is in the glovebox, so thats why on the second day...

day 2.

first and foremost, i saw that awesome mod that LeftysRule22 had (link in above post) and i HAD to get that done.

note my father watching the hockey game, go sabres.
you are the man lefty.

second, i took apart my whole console. (the stickshift and arm rest one.

look, its gone! and its not stolen. taking it off the car wasnt that hard... all that holds it on there are 2 screws.

up come screws, up comes console.
like so

so to further understand what i wanted to and can do, i totally dismantled this thing.

literally...

so i dunno if i am going to ditch the reversed armrest, because it is looking like it might be more hurt than help. but i have debated two other options as well, so a total of 3 options.

1) armrest
2) cup holder
3) storage compartment

im really leaning towards number 2, because if is multi leveled, and would make it easy to cut away a space for the plug to just get its head through properly and adhere it to the bottom of the cupholder. problem is that the teeth on the plug need to be squeezed (look at diagram)

the teeth can be dremmeled if i have to, but so far that is my best option. and input would be awesome.

so with the console all apart, and still not in, as they sit next to me while i type this essay for you guys.
here is what is left in the car (and it was too dark to search for the screws i dropped under my seat.

through the cupholder that isnt.

or if i decide to use the storage compartment,

but as you can tell, that cable seems pretty short on slack at that range.

quick side note,
i re-routed the intire black box and white cable so that it could be stored in the dashboard under the headunit, and fed the white ipod cable through the center tunnel of the car to the console pictured.
felt it looked a lot nicer.

tomorrow or sunday my friend and i are going to do some cupholder modifications or armrest or storage compartment.
feedback woulod be LOVED.
