iPod Idea

SO I had this theory today.
I want to iPod the ralliart,
I want to keep the stock head unit,
but if I cant, thats alright I guess,
I have a spare Pioneer hu,
it jams with cd's once in a while, but thats
not a prob for the ipod.

Here is where this becomes adventurous.
I want to reverse the arm rest,
mount the ipod on the inside of it
(flips open and theres Ipod)
and I want to have it recieve a charg while its in there.

I dont know if anyone else agrees with me on this,
but I HATE having wires in my car,
So i dont want to use the Lighter power unit.
does anyone have a wiring diagram for the 04 RA's
cause i want to turn a car charger in to a "car charger".

I know were talking changing DC to AC etc.
Anyone have any ideas? Im really excited about this and it will look sweet in the end.

(also wanna get the radar detectors cable off the dash too and do the same to that.)

There's a piece that attaches to the stock headunit and allows you to run an ipod directly. Do a search with "iPod" and it should come up.

Well to start youll need an old ipod cable

AC to DC isnt a problem. coming out of the box that plugs into the wall is DC... just find out what voltage you need...put the positive and negative wires in the corresponding places...run the those cables from (i would suggest) the cigarette lighter through all the plastic and up through the console into the ipod cable. then run another set of wires for the audio output from your ipod to an FM Modulator/Mitsu Adapter/Aftermarket HU....reverse mounting the lid...good luck

couldnt help you on the mounting of it though. it'd be cool to have an ipod dock type thing mounted on the lid so you could slide it in real easy.

you can find tons of these diagrams everywhere. but heres an example of what to use to find out what cables do what inside the ipod cable.

i like your idea though....too bad i dont have an ipod. Creative FTW!!

thanks, the cig idea was just what a friend and i were talking about last night.
But stupid me just realized my old CD player has RCA ports, not an AUX.
So i will have to think of another Idea, Or jack the cd player from my golf.

Also what my buddy and I thought of also was that i could get a cigarette adapter "doubler"
for lack of better word. (2 ports after 1 plugs into the cigarette lighter port)
I could plug my radar detector into one and the ipod car charger into the other,
cut it after the point on the cable where they meet, and take those 2 wires
and connect the hot and ground to the hot and ground of the cig unit.
and yes, creativity is the name of this project.

I talked to a car audio shop nearby and they said they could put a Y into the antenna cable. One part goes to the deck the other to your ipod. You just flip a switch when you want to switch from radio to you ipod. This normally cost about $50 but the reception is better than a wireless transmitter.

Until i get my cd player back, yeah I might nab a 10$ one.

just so you know, Radio Shack sells RCA to Mini-Jack connectors. I have used them a lot for different audio applications. The sound quality isn't compromised since RCA is stereo.

So that has nothing to do with the radio right? Cause I've seen another kit like this but it somehow hooks in with the radio so it sounds almost as bad as the FM transmitter.

wonder how long that cable is...
hope it can reach my arm rest.

and to the poster of the switch based FM
transmitter that plugs in.

Its still FM quality, but withouth the humming
and helicopter sounds you hear from the wireless ones.
not digital.

It should as that is where most factory locations place their ipods if the vehicle is equipped with such a unit...Plus its OEM part.
