I have that problem when it's cold, especially downshifting into first or second. I assumed it was related to the synchros in the tranny. I assumed there may just not be any - I double-clutch to get into those gears when it's cold and have far fewer problems.

I've got the same mileage on my car at the moment and I've noticed this from the get-go.

i have the same problem but never downshifting, neilscully, you should not downshift into first, its not good for the car, 1rst gear isnt really supposed to be a downshift gear, it works, but its not good for it.

well, I don't actually use it to slow. By downshift in this case, I mean rolling to a red light that turns green and under 2-5 MPH, shifting into 1st. It's not really downshifting I know, but getting into 1st while the car is moving at all can be difficult when it's cold.

my jetta used to be horrible for this. It got to the point where i would grind the gears with the clutch on the floor if it was too cold! The lady that owned it before me beat the **** out of it i guess.

On cold mornings, you could try dry-shifting it a bit while its warming up. Get the syncro's warmed up/tranny oil flowing. Always worked great in my V-dub, do it for my lancer and seems to do the trick.

Thumbs up Re: notchy 1-2 shift (may be wheel hop)

I think it's the wheel hop your feeling. Check out the little article that road race did on making it better. Hope this helps a little.

no, it has to do with the fact that the 1st is the only non-syncro'd gear, so, it will have a bit of a notchy feel, however, I've noticed mine is more notchy when it's colder. Now that the weather is warming up, I notice t alot less. However, this is also what prevents the upshifts from happening in higher RPMs, and you might have to wait until it's in extremely low RPMS in order to get it back in first for "engine braking."

Sorry about the earlier post. It was a little off topic. I guess it helps to really read what you guys are talking about. My bad. But now that you guys mention it, yeah I've noticed that about the gears too. Oh well paid off in another year and a half. I think I can handle it till then. After that it's evo time! Hopefully there won't be a problem there.

you could get a short throw shifter and make ALL the gears feel nice and tight
